Kohl’s Credit Card Review: Yes2You Charge Card

The Kohl’s card is aimed at regular shoppers seeking big discounts on everyday items purchased from the Kohl’s store. This store card is part of the Yes2You Rewards program and offers regular discounts and other perks aimed at fans of this chain.

The question is, can Kohl’s shoppers benefit more from this card or from a general rewards credit card, and are the pros enough to offset the cons?

The Kohl’s Credit Card is a closed-loop store card, which means it can only be used in Kohl’s stores. It is a basic credit card and doesn’t carry the sort of features found on Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards. There is a 3 digit CVV code on the back of the card and this is required when making purchases, but that’s pretty much the limit of its security.

The Kohl’s card has a high interest rate (not surprising for cards of this type) and average fees. There is no annual fee and you can pay your credit card bill online (My Kohl’s Charge website or the Kohl’s app), by phone, in-store, or via regular mail.

You don’t need an impeccable credit score to apply for this rewards card and as long as you have a relatively clean credit report with a score above 600, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Cardholder Benefits

The Kohl’s Charge Card offers a 35% discount to all new members. This can be used as soon as you have the card in your possession, and it’s offered on most store purchases.

There are 12 discounts offered throughout the year and as soon as you earn My Valued Customer (MVC) status, you’ll get even more benefits.

MVC is acquired by spending just $600 on your card during a calendar year and in addition to several more discounts, it grants free shipping opportunities and a birthday gift. Thanks to the Yes2You Rewards program, shoppers can collect points every time they shop in a Kohl’s store or at Kohl’s.com. An equivalent of 5% cash back is offered via this reward point scheme, and these points can be used at checkout for more discounts.

Alternatives to the Kohl’s Club Credit Card

There are many credit cards that offer better terms than the Kohl’s card. With reward cards from AmEx and Capital One, for instance, you’ll typically get an introductory APR, a high credit limit, and the chance to turn rewards into everything from statement credit to gift cards. With other store credit cards, you’ll get a higher rate of rewards, more discounts, and a host of perks.

There are better alternatives out there, and we have listed a few similar cards below to help you find the right one for you.

Target REDcard Store Card

Generally, there are two types of retail store cards: Those that offer rewards and those based around financing. Both act like glorified loyalty cards and the intention is always to get you to spend more money in the store. With the Target REDcard, the intention remains the same, but the setup is a little different.

In place of rewards, the Target REDcard store card offers discounts. Rather than getting 5% cash back on every dollar that you spend, you get a 5% discount on every item you purchase from the Target store. Minus a few extra redemption options, the end result is pretty much the same, because in both cases, you’re saving 5%.

What’s more, the Target REDcard offers all users free two-day shipping in addition to a 10% discount on their cardmember anniversary.

Staples Business Credit Card

The Staples card is aimed at small businesses that spend a lot of money in the Staples store and at Staples.com. This card offers a flat cash back rate of 5% for all Staples purchases, and there are also financing options that offer 0% APR for up to 18 months (or as little as 6 months, depending on the size of your purchase).

It’s a closed-loop credit card, so it can’t be used outside of Staples, but it’s one of the best cards out there aimed exclusively at office supplies. In addition to the 5% rate, there are annual perks and account opening perks.

This card is ideal if you’re a freelancer or you have a small business. It can help you to purchase the equipment you need to upgrade or renovate your business, whether that be new computers and desks, or a whole heap of paper and other bare essentials. By utilizing the 0% APR financing options, you can get the supplies you need today and worry about paying for them later.

Amazon Prime Credit Card

The Amazon Prime Credit card is one of four Amazon cards and it’s our personal favorite. It’s an open-loop card, which means it can be used for all purchases and functions like a traditional credit card, and it’s also part of the Visa Signature program. Visa Signature is Visa’s second reward tier and offers additional fraud protection, travel insurance, purchase protection, and more.

The Amazon Prime Credit Card gives you 5% cash back when you use the card in the Amazon store and you can earn the same rate at Whole Foods. There is a flat rate of 1% for most other purchases, but this increases to a generous 2% when you use the card to buy gas or pay for meals at qualifying restaurants.

The only downside to this card, apart from the fact that it doesn’t have the best interest rate or fees, is that you will need to be an Amazon Prime member and membership costs $119. However, there is no annual fee to pay and Amazon Prime offers many benefits of its own, all of which make membership worthwhile.

If you’re not the sort of person who will benefit from an Amazon Prime subscription, you probably won’t be interested in this card and you definitely won’t spend enough time and money at Amazon to make it worth your while.

The consumers who will benefit the most from this card are the ones who have already gone all-in with The Zon, which means they’ll likely have an Amazon Prime account.

Bottom Line: Is the Kohl’s Card Right for you?

The Kohl’s credit card has a high APR, limited cash back rewards, and no bonuses for money spent at gas stations, grocery stores, and other common expenses. It’s a store card with limited scope and very few benefits. If you spend a lot of money at Kohl’s and want to be rewarded, it might be worth looking into. But typically, you’ll get more benefits from using general cash reward credit cards.

Take a look at the credit card offers mentioned above, include some standard reward cards in your search, and calculate the pros as well as the cons to make sure your chosen cards won’t cost you more than they earn you.
