Letter from the President. When my oldest daughter was born I submitted a request to the White House and received a personally signed letter of congratulations from President Bush. I cannot find information online about whether President Obama is continuing that, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. You can contact the White House here. Under the old rules you could request a letter of congratulations for any child under the age of 1.
Birthday Cake. If you live in the Twin Cities, then listen up.
Did you know that Byerly’s/Lunds give free cakes for baby’s first birthday? At Byerly’s you must show the child’s birth certificate. Byerly’s/Lunds cake serves 6-8 people and Kowalski’s serves 3-4 people. Find a Byerly’s or Lunds near you here and a Kowalski’s here. **Update: You can find the updated Lunds & Byerly’s free-cake-with-purchase offer as well as other birthday freebies for kids in this post.
Wondering about the rabbit in the picture? It is the cake my mom and I made for my oldest daughter’s first birthday (and a cake I often had as a kid growing up). We used a free cake mix, some coconut and food coloring, three M&Ms and a single piece of licorice. Cute and very inexpensive. But that was before I knew about the cakes from Byerly’s and Kowalskis.
Your turn: What was your experience taking advantage of any of these? What other baby freebies do you know about?
