Just a reminder – this is happening this upcoming Saturday!
Mark your calendars! Saturday, February 25 is Try Hockey for Free Day at participating locations across the country. Kids ages 4-9 have the opportunity to don some hockey apparel, put on some skates, and participate in different activities and drills to learn about hockey and have fun while doing it.
Locals, there are 27 participating locations in Minnesota, including 13 in the Twin Cities metro area.
First Hand Experience
Last year, my friend and Pocket Your Dollars team member Mary took her two boys ages 6 and 8 to the event for the first time. Here’s what she says about the experience:
“My boys had a blast! The people at the event were so welcoming and took time to make sure each boy got fitted with the appropriate hockey gear. (This takes awhile, so arrive early because it is a time consuming process and you’ll want to ensure that your child’s size is still available.) Once in their gear, the boys commented how they looked like ‘real’ hockey players now. A woman working at the event looked at them and replied, ‘You are real hockey players today!’ which was met with huge grins from the boys.
“No skating experience is necessary, and the coaches work with kids at different stations at whatever their skill level. At the end of the event the boys were exhausted from their hard work being a ‘real hockey player’ for the day. They got to keep their jersey and hockey stick (Carrie’s note: This may not be the case at all locations), and received a goody bag complete with information about hockey, stickers, a certificate, juice box and granola bar. The juice and granola bars were promptly gone!”
This would be a great opportunity to see if your child has an interest in hockey before investing a lot of money. It would also be a fun, free weekend activity to keep the kiddos busy and get some great exercise.
