**Update: Several things about Ibotta have changed since we first introduced them back in December, so we’ve updated the information here and are re-posting. Please leave if a comment if you have any questions.
You know how to earn cash back for purchasing items online (*insert shameless plug for Pocket Your Dollars Rewards*), but what about purchasing groceries in-store?
Well, a new super easy way to get money back for items you purchase is by using Ibotta, a new app (for iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and for Android) that pays you for every designated item you purchase.
Here’s how to get started:
- Sign up for a free Ibotta account. You can either sign in with Facebook or use your email address.
- Check your email and confirm your account (if you signed up via email).
- Download the app from the iTunes store or from Google Play for Android.
Once you’ve downloaded the app, open it up and sign in with the account information that you gave above. The “Offers” tab should pop right up. From there, you can scroll through to see which items are currently available for cash back and the total value you can earn from each one.
If you find an offer you like, click the “Earn” button underneath each one to add the potential earnings to your account. Depending on the offer, you may need to learn a fact, take a poll, answer a trivia question, perform an action on Facebook or watch a video to add the offer to your Ibotta account.
After purchasing the item(s) at a select retailer, click “Redeem” and then click the store where you made your purchase. Upload a photo of your receipt, then click “Done.” That’s it!
They are constantly adding new retailers to the list, but right now you can redeem these offers at the following retailers (stores in bold are the stores we cover here at Pocket Your Dollars):
- City Market
- CVS Pharmacy
- Dollar General
- Duane Reade
- Family Dollar
- Food 4 Less
- Fred Meyer
- Giant Eagle
- Harris Teeter
- Ingles Markets
- King Soopers
- Pick ‘n Save
- Stop & Shop
- Tom Thumb
- United States Armed Forces Commissary
- WinCo Foods
Where’s My Cash?
OK, so now what? Ibotta will verify your purchase(s) and notify you within 24 hours if your credit is available. They require a $5 minimum balance to start redeeming your earnings which you can cash out via PayPal. Once you’ve earned at least $1, you’ll also have the option of donating your earnings to a school of your choice.
Users can also earn Bonuses for additional cash in addition to the product-specific offers. Select “Bonuses” in the app’s main menu to check out instructions and earning levels for bonuses. We’ll let you know as new bonuses roll-out.
Inactivity Fee. It is your responsibility to keep your Ibotta account active. If you fail to log into your Ibotta account for twelve (12) months, your Ibotta account will be considered “inactive.” While your account is inactive, Ibotta will deduct an amount equal to one dollar and 99 cents ($1.99) from your accumulated Rewards every month prior to reactivation (“Inactivity Fee”). Ibotta will attempt to notify you before your account becomes inactive by sending you an email to the address we have on file for you. Subject to Ibotta’s right to terminate your account under these Terms, you may reactivate your Ibotta account by logging in to your Ibotta account. If your state’s law prohibits Ibotta from charging the Inactivity Fee, Ibotta may deduct an Inactivity Fee equal to the maximum permitted by the laws of your state.
- The $1.99 deducted each month will come from your accumulated Rewards, not from your linked PayPal account. That means it only applies to those who have a Reward balance.
- You will be notified via email before your account becomes inactive.
- You may keep your account active just by logging in; you do not need to complete an offer to keep your account active.
If you have any more questions, click the “Help Center” link at the bottom of this page. They have a pretty extensive Q&A section that should cover just about any question you have.
