Walgreens Shopping List 10/9 – 10/15/11

This deal has expired and may no longer be valid.

Pick up free lozenges and possibly free CoverGirl cosmetics this week at Walgreens, plus find decent deals on Biore skin care, John Frieda hair care, and Listerine mouthwash.

If you’re new to Walgreens shopping, then learn how the Register Rewards program works and learn how to read this shopping list. Don’t forget that some other stores will accept Register Rewards like a manufacturer’s coupon. Also, it’s a good idea to print out Walgreens’ official coupon policy and keep it with you in case an issue comes up at checkout.

This is a starting list of deals for the week and is not a comprehensive list of every sale item and its coupons, but just the best deals (things at prices I’d actually pay). We will update this list as readers leave comments with bargains they found at their local store, we get emails with deal ideas or we read about other deals across the blogosphere. Items that are added throughout the week will be noted as NEW. Items whose final price changes as a result of a new or modified coupon scenario will be noted as UPDATED. At least once this week, we will send out a reminder to come back and check this list for the hottest new deals.

Walgreens is the one store where an advertised sale like “2/$4” usually requires you to buy two products. The first one rings at full price and the second product will ring at a lesser price to bring the total to $4, using our example. If you ever question whether you need to buy two to receive a sale price, ask the cashier to scan one item for you. If it rings at full price, then you know you need to buy two products. If it rings at the sale price, then you don’t.

Your turn: What other deals did you find this week at Walgreens?

  1. jo says:

John Frieda shampoo/comditioner is awesome price at Wags this week. Based on onlne price $6.49. Buy 2 root awakenings and 2 any John Frieda use (2) $2/1 any John Frieda and (2) $2/1 Root Awakenings from 10/09 insert get $10 RR for purchasing $20 nets out to $1.99 each.

  2. Emily says:

I heard that the Cottenelle deal is only on the purple packs and not the blue packs. Can anyone confirm that? Thank you.

  3. Julie says:

I don’t usually shop at Walgreens… Can you find the coupon book at the front of the store? (I’m looking for the Cottenelle coupon.) Or do you get it from the newspaper or mail? Thanks.

  4. Tracy says:

In regards to the Olay ProX coupon, I can only find $10 off 2 products in the 9/26 Red Plum. Am I missing something?

  5. Chris says:

I saw Vicks VapoDrop cough drops for $.89. There was a $1/1 Vicks Product coupon in the last P&G insert so these should be free after coupon.

  6. kelsey says:

i have a question for the wallgreens deal the mfg covergirl coupon is $8/2 face products.. what is considered a face product is it just conealer and powder or eyeshadow to? Because all of my makeup goes on my face lol so i’m just very confused… thanks

    • mary says:

some of the pyd’ers were discussing this on last week’s Target matchups. I think the general consensus is that makeup (at least the CoverGirl at Target) is categorized into lips, eyes, and face (face including, concealer, powder, blush, bronzer, foundation, etc). That said, some ppl reportedly had some success using the coupon on eyeshadow.

    • Chris says:

I used the $8/2 coupon on eyeshadow with no problems.

    • Michelle B. says:

Per COVERGIRL’s website, Face products are Foundation, Powder, Concealer, Blush, Bronzer, and Face Tools.

Face Tools include Powder Brush, Blush Brush, Powder Puffs, Sponge Puffs, and Sponge Wedges.

Eye shadow falls under their Eyes line.

Some cashiers are pushing through the coupons (though they are not supposed to) for eye shadow or other eye products.

      • Carrie Rocha says:

I’d advise against asking cashiers to push through coupons that are not for the products listed on the coupon. First, that’s not right, which should be reason enough, but also , the store may not get reimbursed from the manufacturer. If they don’t get reimbursed, then they pass they pass the loss through to us in higher prices.

      • Michelle B. says:

Thanks for stating it more clearly than I did Carrie. I NEVER advise trying to push a coupon through on products that they are not supposed to be used on. I apologize if there was confusion.

    • Jodi says:

CG has a small blush called “Cheekers” which are usually the same price as the eyeshadow, but are actually covered under the Q. The Q may scan with the eyeshadow, but if you use it for that, Wags will not get reimbursed, since it is technically not the right product.

I am not usually the coupon police, but it’s just so obvious that it’s not supposed to be used on the eyeshadow, and I hate for stores to stop taking Q’s because people are misusing them.

CG also has a 3-shade blush that is usually between $4 and $5, so it’s still a great deal. I used mine at Target, though, and got overage, since the regular price for their cheekers is $3.70-something. This would is a good item to buy if you are looking to use RR’s that are expiring, though.

    • Chris says:

Oops sorry if I caused a stir by using the covergirl coupon on eyeshadow… Contrary to what was said, it really wasn’t obvious what was meant on the coupon when it said “face” products. The list above didn’t mention anything in particular, the register didn’t have a problem with the coupon, and the cashier didn’t say anything. And since I don’t buy or use makeup (I’m not a female) I’m pretty clueless about it. I just saw it was a good deal for free and I needed Christmas gifts for my nieces. So I just grabbed a couple pink colored things off the shelf and got out of that department pretty quickly. I figured if it wasn’t nail polish, and since it went on the face, then it worked with the coupon. It certainly wasn’t intentional and never meant to misuse the coupon policy or cause a stir.

      • Carrie Rocha says:

Chris – You sound as human as I am. No worries :)

      • Todd says:

I also used the $8/2 coupon unknowingly on the eye shadow. We usually shop together, but I handle the coupons and transactions, the payment, and track our savings. I told my wife we could get free covergirl products, so she picked out some eyeshadows. I didn’t tell her the coupons were good for “face” products – because it all goes on the “face” to me (LOL). The store took the coupons and didn’t say anything about them.

So it’s not obvious to everyone which “face” products are included, and we definitely didn’t intentionally misuse the coupons either. Just an honest mistake.

        • Jodi says:

I apologize if I offended you guys. I was carrying over the discussion from last week’s Target list. (Using the Q’s there may get you overage if you get their “Cheekers” blush or bronzer.)

I have made mistakes using Q’s too. Just last week, at Rainbow I used a Q that was not supposed to be doubled, but it only read “do not double” in the fine print, further down, and not at the top like they usually do. It didn’t beep either. I only realized it later when I came on here and it was mentioned in the comments. (It was for Sure deodorant.) My only problem is when people have cashiers push Q’s through that they know are not for that particular product.

JSYK, the “face v. eye cosmetic” is also true of some of other companies, so it’s good to be aware of it. Some Q’s cover any product while some specify “face” or “eye.” I agree, it can be confusing. Some of them also specify how many Q’s you can use per transaction (the CG $8/2 stated 4 duplicate per trans, I believe). I only had 4, so IDK if a 5th one would’ve caused a beep.

          • Missi says:

I would not have known there was a distinction between face eyes and lips either, had I not read these comments. I used the CG $8/2 Q, and previous ones like it, on eye and lip products many times before with no second thought about it and no problems using them at the register. I know other people who used the Q that way also. In fact I don’t think most people would see this Q’s wording as being obvious at all. To me “Covergirl Face Products” was no different than other Q’s such as “Dean’s Milk Dairy Products” or “Chef Boyardee Soup Products” or “Tide Laundry Products” or any number of Q’s with similar wording…

          • Jennifer M. says:

I did my Wags shopping on Sunday and Monday and did not even see that the Q had a distinction on it. I never have time to scrutinize my coupons and figure if they are Carrie’s lists, they are legit. So, I got 2 powder, 2 blush, 2 mascara, 2 eyeliner and 2 lip gloss. The register never beeped and the cashier didn’t bat an eye that I was using more than 4 in my transaction. I almost wish I wouldn’t have read this now because I feel horrible that I used the coupons on things that were not covered by the coupon. Extra Hail Marys for me this week . . . .

      • Jodi M. says:

Are you the Chris from the Target thread? It’s kind of hard to tell who you are talking with one here sometimes because a lot of people go by their first names. There is another Jodi, spelled the same, on here that is not me (which is why I have decided to start using an initial.)

There was a Chris on that thread that tried to use the Q’s at Target last week, on the eyeshadow, and complained that they didn’t work, when I read the name, I thought that was you, but maybe it isn’t.

      • Eric says:

Chris, I like you am a guy and thought most make up products were used on the face. Imagine how shocked I was last night when my loving wife informed me that eyes and lips are no longer part of one’s face. I’m not looking forward to explaining to my three children that their eyes and lips no longer are part of their faces. Can anyone please tell me what body part these facial features now belong to?

  7. mary says:

hello all! I have a kinda rookie question that I should know the answer to by now, but, do the Wags coupons (either from the monthly coupon book or weekly ad) count as manufacture coupons? I know your manu. q are not supposed to exceed item count, but I’m not sure how to figure.
Here’s my scenario today, I picked up the cottonelle tp, 2 packages and 2 boxes of nature valley granola bars. I used the Wags Q for the cottonelle ($2 off), plus two .50 off cottonelle manu qs. Then for the granola bars I used the Wags Q, plus one .75 off 2 boxes manu q. They had some problems ringing at first, but then they worked it out – and I received the $3 RR for the Cottonelle. I thought it was them, but was it my fault? Should I have added fillers in my transaction? TIA!

    • Chris says:

Wags coupons (from the monthly book or the weekly flyer) don’t count as manuf coupons. Register Rewards however DO count as manuf coupons.
Seems to me your transaction should have rang up fine, no filler item needed unless you used a RR.

      • Mary says:

Ok thanks! That’s what I was thinking but got confused when the manager said something about the wags qs ringing up as manu qs. I guess the order is important?! Anyway, thanks!

        • Dealwagger says:

From what I have read on blogs, you should hand the Walgreens coupons last, manufacturer’s coupons first. I read two blogs that recommended manufacturer, than monthly booklet, then in-ad coupons. PYD usually says manufacturer than wags Q’s. Whenever I run into snags my friendly cosmetics counter cashiers work it out so I have never really gotten it down.
          Anyone have any ideas?

          • C~~ says:

I found these tips for presenting coupons at walgreens on another website – southernsavers (dot) com. Hope this helps. :)

            • Any $/$$ (like $5 off $20 purchase)
            • Register Rewards
            • B1G1 manufacturer coupons
            • Other Manufacturer coupons
            • Then Store coupons

  8. Missi says:

I just had one of my best walgreens transactions so far!
2 Cottonelle Ultra 12pks, @ $5.00 each. Used $1 Wag coupon, two $.75 manuf coupons.
2 Listerine Total Care Zero, @ $2.74 each. Used two $2/1 printed coupons.
3 Vicks VapoDrops, @ $.89 each. Used three $1/1 coupons.
    6 Covergirl makeup, 3 @ $3.49 each, 3 @ 50% off. Used three $8/2 coupons.
Total, with tax included = $1.05.
    Received $3 RR from Cottonelle.
PLUS received two more $2/1 listerine total care zero catalinas and one $1/1 any Listerine catalina.

    • Michelle B. says:

Did you get the overage from the Covergirl products?

      • Missi says:

Yes I got the overage from Covergirl and from the Vicks. Actually my store does not adjust coupons down – in fact they refuse to do so. I’ve even brought in their coupon policy printed out where it says they can do it, and the manager still refuses. I remember a few weeks ago buying the Vicks drops with the previous coupon. That’s all I wanted to buy that trip, but they would not adjust the coupon down so I had to buy some filler first.

  9. Chris says:

Same here – if you buy the Listerine Total Care Zero, the machine will spit out another $2/1 coupon. They are $2.74 at my store, making them $.74 each.

  10. Chris says:

I also saw Kashi cereals on sale 2/$6. The $2/1 coupon from Recyclebank would bring them down to $1 a box.

  11. Cathy says:

The cottonelle didn’t print out any rewards with any packs at my Walgreens in Va yesterday.

  12. Joy says:

Looks a there is a RR deal on the Fusion razor again. On sale for $9.99, use $5 coupon from P&G insert and get $4RR back.

  13. m.r.l. says:

Is $1.49 for the Phineas and Ferb Smart Rinse mouthwash (on sale for $2.49 – $1MC=$1.49) a great deal or just an okay deal. Does anyone regularly see this for less? My kids love this and I am wondering if I should stock up at this price.

  14. Joy says:

Also free Arrid Deodorant with in ad coupon and coupon from their website.

  15. Dennis says:

I went to the Walgreens in Robbinsdale MN and they DO NOT honor the cottonelle deal mentioned on pocketyourdollars.com. They were very confrontational about it as well. Just an FYI. THey asked where I saw this deal and I said on pocketyourdollars.com. THey did not know of this website. How do you know about this deal being a month long deal?

    • JoAnna says:

Walgreens doesn’t sponsor PYD. I have had some employees who have heard of PYD and some who haven’t. Most have been very supportive and happy to learn about PYD. The deal worked for the purple pkgs at the chaska walgreens though it was signed.

  16. Amber says:

That is weird because I went to the Walgreens in Robbinsdale across from Mcdonald’s and got this deal today!!!

  17. Jennifer M. says:

Has anyone gotten the Cottenelle deal to work at a Wags in the NW metro? Maple Grove, Rogers, Elk River, Monticello? I want to stock up, so I am hoping somebody can give me a heads up! I love the help pocketeers give each other when it comes to these type of deals . . . . TIA!

    • joan says:

Worked for me in Monticello :)

    • C~~ says:

Jennifer – just so you can see a picture of the Cottonelle that is producing the RR’s, go to wildforwags (dot) com, scroll all the way to the bottom of the first page, then click on ‘older posts’, this will take you to the 2nd page.

At the very bottom of the second page is a picture of the Cottonelle Ultra (purple 12-pack), posted on Oct 7. Hope this helps.

    • MB says:

Worked for me in Elk River yesterday.

  18. Michelle R says:

I just got back from Walgreens…

Concealer – $5.49; Cheekers bronzer – $4.79 (-50% 2.40); 9 of the 39 cent candies (I’ll explain at the end since the limit is 6); 2 halls warm ups, 2 tic tacs, arrid xx – total after coupons ($8/2 covergirl, $1/2 halls, $1/2 tic tacs, $1/1 arrid + walgreens 99cent in ad coupon, and for some reason the receipt says another $1 off so maybe I’m forgetting something?) and I used a $5RR that would expire tomorrow for a OOP total of $1.27. yes, even running the manufacturer first – they change it to 99cents (i wonder if she accidentally ran it s the dollar AND 99cents?).

Anyway, first I only had 6 39cent candies, and my total was $5.04 and couldn’t use my RR because it doesn’t cover tax (I swore I figured it out to be about $6 but I was wrong) – so she said to go get more candies (I said I couldn’t there was a limit of 6, but she said it was okay this time) – took 3 more candies until it accepted my $5RR – so $1.27 OOP and they gave me $1RR – which makes total for above 27 cents :)

At my husband’s request, I am making a chart of Walgreens purchases and RRs and savings to keep track of my OOP – since he worries I’m buying things we don’t need (like tic tacs this time).

    • V says:

Michelle R….hmmm…I would be “tick taced” OFF if my hubby told me that….he and I know how much work I put into my couponing and well he’d know better than to tell me we don’t need something as tiny as tic tacs….especially with his breath…ha ha… And by the way I think it is great others say they keep track of all their savings and money spent compared to the regular price etc….I wish I had that kind of time….if I am getting things at a fraction of the price or free I don’t need to know at the end of the year how much I saved all together.

  19. Kathleen says:

    Arrid coupon is gone

  20. Amy says:

Hi Everyone there was a Buy one get one free coupon for the John Frieda I think on the web couple weeks ago so if you have maybe it counts for a sweet deal for the $10 RR k! So I hope it works people work to hard for there money and they should enjoy to hang on to it!

  21. Lori says:

Nope, the buy one get one free doesnt work for the john frieda deal this week. I tried it tonight and when the RR didnt print I asked why not (I had even bought a box of the hair foam to make sure I went over the 20) and she said that its because I got the one for free.

    • jo says:

That shouldn’t be the case as it only matters what the total original price is for RR. My purchase before Q’s was 20.97 and after was 14.97 and still got $10 RR.

      • JoAnna says:

It would be the case if the bogo printable is a Walgreen’s store coupon but not if it is a manufacturer’s coupon. I have the coupon at home but I don’t remember off hand what it is.

  22. Amy says:

The Arrid coupon is out of prints.

  23. Sarah says:

I usually buy double rolls of toilet paper and haven’t been couponing long enough to know what a good toilet paper deal is. Is the Cottonelle deal rock bottom?

    Thanks!

  24. Jill says:

Sauk Rapids, MN store has a $3 off $10 purchase coupon this week for the grand opening of the new store there. Must spend $10 (AFTER coupons). Coupon was in the St Cloud Times, and was also available in the store Monday.

  25. melinda says:

I Am unable to get Blink $1.50/1 Blink printable coupon. It tells me I have already printed it. (although I have not). I have tried it on two computers & get the same message.

    • JoAnna says:

Anyone else have this issue? I can’t check to see if it prints because I am at work and the computers do not allow us to install the software.

  26. Missi says:

I also found boxes of Tide Powder on clearance for $2.24. With the $2/1 Gain or Tide powder coupon from a previous insert, this came to only $.24 each!!! I was able to pickup several of them at this price, which is an AMAZING price for Tide brand. It’s probably specific to this one store, but for this price is worth keeping an eye out at other stores for the powders going on clearance too.

    • Laura Wales says:

Missi – That is a great deal! I’ll check my Walgreens when I shop there tomorrow but I’m not very optimistic. It would be awesome to get it at that price, though!

  27. MK says:

On the Cottonelle deal, I got a $2 RR last week from the granola bars. If I use the dollar off manufacturers coupons and the Wags monthly coupon book coupon along with the $2 wags RR from granola bars, will I still get the $3 RR? Thanks

    • JoAnna says:

      MK–
You have 2 pkgs of tp so you can have 2 manufacturer coupons. If you use two $1 off manufacturer coupons and a RR you will have 3 manufacturer coupons–so you would need a filler item. Where did you find $1 manufacturer coupons??

    • Jen says:

I thought if used previous RR to purchase something, you wouldn’t get the RR for that deal ???

      • JoAnna says:

        Jen–
If you have a RR from P&G then you can’t use that RR to help pay for another P&G item that would give you a RR. But you can use the P&G RR to buy an item from a diff manufacturer and you will get the RR. Does that make sense??

  28. Jodi says:

IMO, the “other people have do it/have done it” or the fact that they go through without beeping are irrelevant.

I think everybody has used a coupon erroneously in the past. Anybody who says they’re perfect is either not a frequent couponer, or mistaken. I can think of at least 10 times over the 8 years that I’ve been couponing that I have done it, and I’m guessing there are more that I am not aware of. (One of these was just a few days ago at Rainbow with the DND on Sure deodorant.)

IMO, the important thing is not doing it on purpose after you understand the distinction. I was not accusing anybody of that, just saying the debate was pretty much settled at this point. My intention in my original comment was to offer options of two cosmetics that are face products that would be free or nearly free (the cheekers blush and bronzers, and their 3-shade blushes).

I think I made this exact mistake with a Neutrogena coupon years ago because they make the same distinction (face/eye/lip). I also think Revlon makes this distinction. Bottom line, if you think you will be using make up coupons in the future, it’s a good thing to know.

Like I said, I was carrying over the discussion from this site in last week’s Target thread because a PP (Mary) mentioned the discussion where we were debating the same thing, and some were saying they had no trouble doing it. IMO, it was obvious at that point (after all the discussion in the Target thread), as it should be obvious at this point in this thread, especially since a PP (Michelle) posted a list of which fall under which category. In the Target thread there are even direct quotes from their official FB page (I believe). I was responding to a comment that mentioned the discussion on that thread.

    • Michelle B. says:

Jodi- I was the Michelle on the Target thread that explained what the difference was. I also think that things are not always communicated the best over the internet.

My intention with my comment above was that “cashiers are doing it (but they are not supposed to)”, meaning that a cashier overriding it for you is not correct either. It was apparently not read that way (as Carrie made a comment directly after my post).

I was not at all offended by your post and am glad that there are others who help to clarify some of these coupons that are confusing.

I posted in the Target post last week because I saw the deal said it was for the Eye Shadow and I had learned it was not to be used for that product. There are multiple products that the coupon can be legitimately used for to get free products (Blush, Bronzer, and Face Tools). I was thankful PYD switched it to the correct products and are also emphasizing the correct products above.

Let’s do our best to keep working together!

  29. jessica says:

Cottonelle (purple) has anybody had any luck for this working in the st.paul or Stillwater locations?

  30. Kathy says:

I got the purple Cottonelle RR this morning in Hastings.

I haven’t been able to find any Vicks brand cough drops at the two stores I’ve checked. Does anyone know where these are located in the store?

  31. jessica says:

Vicks are all by the checkout counter where the candy is.

  32. Lindsey says:

Similac is cheaper at Target. It is on sale at Target for $21.09 and if you buy two you get a $5 gift card.

  33. cindy says:

There will be a new Walgreens opening in Hudson, WI … near Culver’s. (FYI)

  34. Susie says:

Is Walgreen’s changing the wording on their RR’s? I did the Cottonelle deal today and noticed at the bottom of the RR it said for use only at Walgreens. I don’t remember seeing that wording before. Will Cub still take these?

    • JoAnna says:

      Susie–
The RRs have said that for a few months. I have used them at Cub on 41 and 7 in Shorewood with no problems.

  35. meghan says:

has anyone done the john freida deal and want to share what they got? I have 2 $2 off coupons and a $5 off dye coupon so I am trying to work out a good deal. Thanks

  36. meghan says:

Has anyone done the john freida deal and want to share what they got and what coupons they used? I have a $5 off dye, and 2 $2 off products and I am trying to put a deal together. thanks

    • meghan says:

sorry for the duplicate, this computer has a mind of its own!

    • Jen says:

I did 2 conditioner & 1 shampoo for 6.99 each, used 3 $2/1 coupons and got the $10 RR, making them 1.65 each. I love John Freida shampoo/conditioner and rarely see it on sale, so I thought this was a good deal!

  37. Amanda says:

Anyone try the Twizzlers deal? It doesn’t look like the coupon should work for the ones that are pictured in the ad. The q is for indiv. wrapped candy and the sale looks like it only shows the “loose” candy.

  38. Susan says:

Can’t find the 2.00 Total Care Listerine cpn. Do you have to put a certain zip code in to get it?

  39. Kris E says:

If you printed out BOBO Facebook offer on Frizz-ease, you can do
    1 frizz-ease 9.99
3 any other John Frieda products 6.99 (1 will be free)
    Use 3 2/1 and one BOGO = 17,97 – 10 RR = $1.99 each after RR and coupons

Just did it today, worked great.

  40. May says:

:( No $3 RRs on purple packs of Cottonelle in Savage today…without earning RRs this was is way above my buy price. If I didn’t get such a hard time from the manager there, I would return them.
Anyone else having any trouble or luck in the south metro with the $3 Cottonelle RRs? I paid with the $3 RR for Cepacol a couple weeks ago, so it would not have been an issue with rolling. Can someone post the barcode on their Cottonelle that generated RRs? I’m thinking maybe my store had an older/different barcode that isn’t programmed. I have a few more Qs and am running low on TP, but this is no deal for me unless I can get some RRs.

    • Laura Wales says:

May – Hmmm. I’m not sure why it didn’t work for you. I purchased two packs this morning and got my $3 Register Reward with no issues. The barcode on my Cottonelle was 036000297461. Hope this helps!

      • May says:

Aargh. What store location did you get yours? My barcode is the same. I bought 2 packs, used 2 $.75 MQs, the $1/ pack IVC, a $3 Cepacol RR and purchased a $.39 chocolate egg and got zilch back in RRs. I even asked, she double checked the machine – since the deal isn’t advertised in the ad they couldn’t do anything about it. Maybe I need to call Catalina?

        • Laura Wales says:

This was in Maple Grove at the location near Walmart (obviously not in the south metro – sorry!). I have absolutely no idea why the Register Reward didn’t print for you. You could return the packages since they’re above your price point (although I think that $0.27/roll is still a decent price, but I wouldn’t stock up at this price point). You could try calling Catalina, too, but since this deal is unadvertised pretty much everywhere (it’s just been one of those word-of-mouth deals that’s spread across the blogosphere), I don’t know if they’d be able to help you.
