More than sharing great deals with all of you, the Pocket Your Dollars team and I love to hear about how Pocket Your Dollars and the tremendous community we have here are making a difference for your family. A Pocket Your Dollars’ reader, Amanda, recently emailed me this touching story about how this website has positively impacted her son (pictured above). I think you’ll be inspired by it too.
I just wanted to tell you what your site has done for my son Camden this year. He is in the 2nd grade. I applied some of the things I have learned about teaching kids about money from some of the authors that you have referred to your members [note: link added].
Camden has been saving all year for his goal of purchasing a Wii gaming system for himself. He plays the games when he is at all of his friends’ and cousin’s houses. After reading the posting this week from Target, I saw the great deal for the Wii gaming system [Note: This deal is no longer available]. The system also included his favorite game that he has played many times at his cousin’s house.
We haven’t bought a system because we just couldn’t afford it. Camden has been earning money as an allowance for doing chores around the house and placing the money in long-term and short-term savings jars. Tonight we told him about the deal and explained to him that if he had enough money saved, we would pick it up tonight.
We knew that he had enough before we even brought up the idea to him. :) We went to the store tonight to pick it up! He had his Speed Racer wallet full of cash and my pockets were full with 10 dollars in change. He picked out the system and was able to buy another game with the $20 gift card. We are so proud of him!
I just wanted to share this with you because without your advice, we never would have found the book that we used to help us guide him in his savings plan. Also, without this website, I never would have noticed the deal on the gaming system from Target.
Before using Pocket Your Dollars, I just never paid attention…sad, but true. I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I wanted you to know that what you do makes such a difference for so many people. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Congrats to Amanda, Camden and all Camden’s friends who now get to play Wii at his house! Thank you so much, Amanda, for sharing that story with us and allowing us to pass it along to all the Pocket Your Dollars’ readers!
Your turn: If you have a story about a great deal you’ve recently gotten, please let us know through the contact form. We love to hear from you!

I find this story truly heart-warming. Rather than charge a toy for their child, not only was able to purchase it for himself, which must have given him a huge sense of accomplishment, but he also learned an incredibly valuable life-long lesson. Camden is lucky to have such a caring parent!
WTG Camden and Amanda! Thanks for sharing your story. That’s great and such a great encouragement to everyone to teach our kids life-long lessons, as Sheepy said.
When Camden turns 25, please run for United States Congress. I want to vote for a save and spender instead of a borrow and spender.
That’s awesome!
Maybe I’m hormonal, but this story seriously made me cry! So inspiring! Way to go, Camden!
What an awesome story! I loved it! We are trying to figure out a savings “plan” for my children and the mention in this story about a book peaked m!y interest. What book is it that is being talked about? I’m intrested to hear about the short term and long term saving jars. Thank you so much!
Carrie,
The name of the book is called Debt-Proof your Kids by Mary Hunt. it is an easy read, and it really inspired and taught my husband and I how to teach our children about money. He is still certainly not perfect, but we are hoping he makes his mistakes now instead of when he is at our age.
