How to Use Swagbucks: 5 Ways to Earn Points and Prizes Online

This content uses referral links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

Once you figure out how to use Swagbucks, then you can win points and prizes simply by searching the Internet. If it sounds too good to be true, it’s not. It is my family’s primary search engine and I can vouch for the fact that you do earn points that turn into rewards. Side note: my favorite rewards are Amazon gift cards.

What is Swagbucks?

Swagbucks is an online search engine similar to Yahoo and Google, except it rewards it members with points, or Swagbucks, for searching the Internet. Each time you search using the Swagbucks’ web site or toolbar, you have the opportunity to win Swagbucks in various amounts.

What can I win?

The Swagbuck store offers many prizes to choose from including gift cards to popular retailers such as Starbucks, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Once you’ve earned the number of Swagbucks needed for the prize of your choice, you can redeem them. Check out the Swagbucks store (aka Swagstore) to see all the great prizes.

How can I earn Swagbucks?

The good news is Swagbucks doesn’t make you start at zero. The site automatically gives you 30 Swagbucks just for creating an account. Once you’ve set up your account, you can start earning more Swagbucks in a variety of ways including:

Search

Rather than using your regular search engine, log into Swagbucks and enter your search in the search bar. As you perform online searches you’ll occasionally be rewarded Swagbucks in varying amounts. (Some say spreading your searches out will help you win more Swagbucks.)

If you do win Swagbucks during a particular search, a small screen will appear telling you how many you’ve won. You’ll have to enter a security/captcha code to confirm you’re a human and not a robot, then the Swagbucks get added to your account.

Search on Friday

Friday is known as Mega Swagbucks day to Swaggernauts (aka Swagbucks users). All day, every Friday you have a better chance to win higher denominations of Swagbucks for your searches. For instance, where you may normally only win 8 Swagbucks in a typical search on Friday you could earn 30.

Download the Swagbucks Toolbar

Installing the Swagbuck toolbar is a great way to make your searches easier and earn more Swagbucks.

You’ll earn more Swagbucks using the toolbar because it keeps a search box visible the entire time you surf the web so you don’t forget to use Swagbucks for searching.

Plus, each day you connect to the Internet, the Swagbucks toolbar automatically rewards you with 1 Swagbuck.

Finally, the toolbar contains more than a search box. One icon tells you when there a new code becomes available that gives you free Swagbucks without searching. You copy the code information, enter it on Swagbucks home page and you get easy bonus points. The thing is, these codes are time limited, so be sure to plug them into your account as soon as you see them.

Refer Friends

When your friends sign up for Swagbucks using a customized link created from your account, you’ll earn 1 Swagbuck for every 1 Swagbuck they earn, up to 1,000 Swagbucks. In full disclosure, the links within this post are customized with my referral information so I will receive credit if you sign up using them. If you’re uncomfortable with that, then this link takes you to Swagbucks directly.

Daily Poll

Earn 1 Swagbuck for every day you answer a simple daily poll. You can access the poll through the toolbar or the Swagbucks home page. Think of it this way – one daily poll multiplied by 30 days in a month equals 30 Swagbucks. Do know, however, that you will only earn a Swagbuck for the current day’s poll, not previous polls.

Become a Follower. Follow Swagbucks on Facebook and/or Twitter and you will get access to more codes that give you free Swagbucks. You might see something like this (these are examples and not currently valid codes):

Enter Swag Code “Happy Day” now to get a buck!

Or

The Swag Guy had a great time eating “PepperoniPizza” today.

(Thanks, This Frugal Life for the examples)

Again, the codes only last a few hours so be sure to enter them into your account as soon as you see them.

Shop

Earn Swagbucks the next time you shop online. Much like you can earn cash back when you shop through sites like Ebates and Cashbaq and Shop at Home, you can earn points when you shop most major online retailers through Swagbucks portal. Instead of earning cash back, like you do on many other sites, you earn a certain number of Swagbucks for every dollar you spend online.

Swagbucks continues to add new and different ways to earn, including a birthday bonus, and we’ll do our best to keep you posted on them.

  1. This doesn't sell your name and email to outside sources, does it? It sounds too good to be true, lol.

Do you have the Swagbucks toolbar? I did at one time and I thought it slowed down my searches. I was just wondering if any one else has thought this. At this current time I search through swagbuck, but took the tool bar off.

  3. I use Swagbucks a few times a day. I've gotten two Starbucks gift cards for pretty much doing nothing but searching for stuff I'd be searching for normally. It is pretty cool. I did not, though, install the toolbar. I was afraid it would slow me down as well. I have too many extra things installed already.

Another search engine that has been pretty good to me is Blingo. I've won lots of movie tickets and a total of $150.

I also recommend Instant Cash Sweepstakes. You win very small amounts of money as you take the surveys, but then you can win $50 in the daily drawing. I have won once, plus with the small amounts I've won a total of $45. so it has been almost $100 for a year. I usually take the surveys when I'm on hold on the phone or if I have a free moment while waiting for dinner to cook.

  4. And if you do sign up for Swagbucks, fill out your profiles. It takes a bit of time but you get a lot of points from it. And I always try the surveys. I've only been accepted for a few, but they've been high points, like the one today for restaurants that was 70 points!

  5. I had the same problem and removed the tool bar as well.

the best way to earn money then would to constantly open and close the swagbucks search engine :D

  7. Not really. :) Swag Bucks is smarter than you think – the rewards are pretty random. I'm not actually sure they automatically offer the 1 Swag Buck per day, but if they did, it would be once every 24 hours per account, I'm sure.

  8. Never, ever, ever EEEEVER download tool bars.

    Ever.

    They are bad.

… and Swagbuck's toolbar doesn't work half the time anyway.

  9. hmm. I don't have any toolbars but decided to install the one from swagbucks just to see how it worked. I haven't had any trouble with it not working. If it slows down my searches I haven't noticed. What it does do is give you a bunch of results at the top that are advertisments basically. So you have to sift through those to get normal results. That is frustrating sometimes but other than that I haven't had a problem with it. I have had it for a few months now.

  10. One time I searched and then clicked on a result, figured out it wasn't the one I was trying to get and hit the back button and THEN got swagbucks without having to search again. Not sure how that worked.

  11. well I have been trying to get a lot and I don’t think the daily poll is gonna help me that’s only 30 swag points a mount . well I do the t.v and music that gives me like 50 points a day now that is not to bad . all though I have no clue what to serch . if you have any suggestions please email me mkklove67@gmail.com . thankx hope you give me so suggestions.

Everyone be forewarned: If you are participating in Microsoft’s Bing Rewards, cash in your credits as soon as you have enough or you will risk losing your credits.

Bing is BAD! I used it and accumulated 289 points but Microsoft Bing turned off Bing Rewards and I lost all 289 points.

I was saving the points for an Amazon gift card at 475 points. I logged on last night to do the searches and found out that Microsoft turned off Bing Rewards, effectively cancelling credits I accumulated thus far.

This happened once before. At that time, after 4-5 emails with Microsoft’s Bing Rewards team, I gave up. Their people gave me the standard line, i.e. you should continue to do searches. Microsoft Bing did not recognize the credits I accumulated. So I tried Bing Rewards again. However, this time around, I will not be a fool again with Microsoft Bing. After Microsoft Bing turned off Bing Rewards and I lost all accumulated points thus far, I will not do it again. Microsoft Bing took advantage of us and wasted our time.
