Today I (Carrie) am going to ask you to finish a sentence with the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, each day this week we will have a new sentence for you to finish.
For those of you that need a purpose to this exercise before you are willing to participate (and I know you are out there, but won’t require you to acknowledge who you are) :), let me say this. As we all share thoughts and tidbits with one another I think we can all grow in our individual journeys toward financial freedom. Maybe I hear themes or thoughts that spark new blog posts or television segments. Maybe you hear something that encourages you or that you can answer. Or, maybe it is just a fun conversation that’s sole purpose is to entertain. That’s okay too.
Stay tuned each day this week for the daily finish this sentence starter thought. Today, finish this sentence:
Because of the Recession I…
I’ll start – because of this most current recession I started Pocket Your Dollars and never would have imagined how starting to write a blog would change my whole life and expand the relationships I have to include so many amazing people (that’s you!). Now I’m interested to hear from you, “Because of (this most recent) recession you…what?”
If you are reading this via email and want to chime in, please visit the Pocket Your Dollars’ website and leave a comment by completing the form at the bottom of the article.

My family has used our public library system so much more! We get all of our newspapers, magazines, CDs, and DVDs from there. Not to mention, we also check out many books for everyone in the household and read in one room(to save electricity) as our nightly entertainment.
i am struggling emotionally and financially. i lost my job which was the main income. i am truthful to say that it is hard to know that there will be no new clothes for the teens. they dont understamd. there is a lot of pressure from my husband to just find a job, take care of 4 kids full time, try to figure out how we will buy groceries. we will get through. no other choice.
that
Because of the recession, I unemployed; but, I’m hoping to create work for myself that I’ve always dreamed of doing.
I have learned to embrace the adage: Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Daily I reinforce the “reduce, reuse, recycle” efforts with my five-year-old twins. I love that they think clothes from the consignment shop are hypercool and they don’t know any other way of life except to recycle and compost. And it goes without saying, I’m grateful that Carrie, Laura, and their friends keep throwing excellent ideas and solutions my way. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!
i have always done these things:
-consign clothes
-shop thrift stores
-drive 2 cars that are used and paid for
-freeze veggies and fruits for winter
-shop sales
-garage sale

lost my job (as did my hubby) and had to re-invent myself and forge ahead in a new career path, even though I loved the one I was in. I also got to spend the majority of my son’s second year of life (during the 8 months of my unemployment) with him and my hubby 24/7. It was an amazing experience that I would never have otherwise been able to have since our circumstances rule out the option for me to be a stay-at-home parent.
Because of the recession my husband has learned to eat my fantabulous cooking!! 3 meals a day prepared by yours truly (and only poisoned us once)
…have realized that nothing is “below us” when it comes to bringing in income. My husband was unemployed for many months while I was working only 20 hours a week. If only I knew about Dave Ramsey 5 years ago, we probably would have done alright even then. But we struggled with our credit card and car payments. My husband ended up taking a janitorial position for a local nightclub and I supplemented my income with a weekend restaurant cleaning job and PT fundraising job. Now things are looking up and we even managed to pay down bills (getting to the end of Baby Step 2!) during this trying time. We really appreciate more of what we have instead of wanting stuff we don’t have room for anyway!
Because of this most recent recession, I have ingrained the attitude “It is easier to save a dollar than to make a dollar”. I’ve always thought of myself as frugal, but it wasn’t until I had to save for my wedding in 8 months’ time that I really got down to business. My husband and I moved to Omaha, NE last week for his new job and are down to one income. Because of watching sales, clipping coupons, and taking odd jobs here and there, I think we can make it AND continue on our debt pay-off plan, albeit not as fast (at least until I find my own engineering job). BIG THANKS to Carrie and Pocket Your Dollars – I have saved an incredible amount of money already, and I have only been subscribing for a few months!!
… I wasn’t able to sell my house before we had to move for my husband to start Podiatry school. We have had 3 tenants in our house within 2 years and 2 of them screwed us over bad because THEY lost THEIR jobs. It’s a terrible chain effect. It’s awful that landlords have very little rights when it comes to kicking people out of your own property.
I have some tips i think will help out some of you . Saving money is more than just coupon scrounging . When i was young my mom would can /freeze or preserve all the vegges from the garden. My dad always raised a hog, and butchered it in the fall so we had fresh meat. Sometime we had a beef that he raised to put into the freezer. We lived like kings i would have to say.
We buy dead ripe tomatoes at the fruit stand usually a bushel or 25 lbs for 8 dollars. My Wife can’s tomatoes, makes homemade vegetable soup, and some very enjoyable salsa. She makes jelly and preserves from fruit that is on sale like at aldi, sams and local grocery stores. Sometimes i have fruit from my grapevines and fruit trees that she makes into jelly/ preserves
We bought a good food saver that will vacuum pk meat. I catch sales on roasts, hamburger, stew beef etc. It stays fresh for a year+. no freezer burn. We caned vegetables so when we start a stew in the crock pot with some mushroom gravy all we need to add is a jar of the vegetables we canned. Canning is a process you can do either by pressure or water bath. Please look into it you won’t believe just what all you can do. Save big dollars. Catch stuff on sale and preserve it. hope this helps out some of you.
We planted a large veggies garden this year.
