Although Aldi has some great sale prices on produce, some are a little higher than we have seen in recent weeks. Does that mean we are moving out of summer into fall?
First-time Aldi shoppers, you’ll need to bring a quarter (not 25 cents, but a quarter) for the refundable deposit on your cart and bring your own grocery bags. They take cash or debit card, but not credit card. Find an Aldi near you. If you don’t live near an Aldi, but can get your hands on an ad remember that Target and Walmart will price match equivalent produce items (if sold in the same quantity, packaging, etc.) and Walmart will price match generics if they carry a Great Value brand in the same size/quantity.
If it helps you appreciate Aldi a little more, read Wikipedia’s article about them and learn that Aldi is owned by the parent company that owns Trader Joe’s. Don’t forget Aldi’s double guarantee too, where you will get a replacement product AND a refund if you are not 100% satisfied.
Your turn: Since avocados are on sale, let’s share our favorite ways to use avocados, since they are such a healthy food. Mine, that I have shared before, is a banana/avocado smoothie. We use one avocado, a couple really ripe bananas (that makes them very sweet and you won’t notice the avocado flavor much), some milk and a dash of vanilla extract or vanilla yogurt, if we have it on hand, and a touch of honey if my bananas aren’t ripe. My kids love drinking “green juice” and it is really good for them. How about tyou?
Produce
Nectarines. $0.25 each. These sold for $0.19 each throughout the summer.
Peaches. $0.25 each. These sold for $0.19 each throughout the summer.
Plums. $0.25 each. These sold for $0.19 each throughout the summer.
Avocados. $0.49 each. It’s been awhile, but last May avocados were $0.39 each at Aldi. That aside, this is still by far the lowest price I think you’ll find on them anywhere.
Cantaloupe. $0.99 each. This is the same low sale price we’ve seen all summer at Aldi.
Non-Produce Deals
Baked Beans. $0.59 each. Has anyone tried their baked beans? I like the sweet kind of beans, like Bush’s original, but haven’t had them much this summer because they didn’t hit a super low sale point very often. At $0.59 each I could buy a couple cans of these, if they are any good.
Tortilla Chips. $0.99. This is their everyday price on these. Since I won’t spend more than $1 on snacks, these are something I occasionally pick up since the price is right.
Ground Beef (80/20). $1.99/lb. $1.99/lb is my target price for meat and typically ground beef at this price is the fattier 70/30 or 75/25. I primarily use ground turkey, but will get this beef, season it and form it into patties, then set the patties on a cookie sheet and freeze. Once solid I’ll transfer them to a Ziploc and we can make burgers quickly for dinner one night.

I was just at Aldi yesterday and picked up the multigrain tortilla chips for $1.29. When one type of chip like this goes down to 99 cents like this, do the other varieties tend to go down as well?
Also, since I’m an Aldi newbie, do they do price adjustments?
Thanks!
$.49 for avocados is a good price only if they are large avocados. If they are the small avocados, I probably wouldn’t bother going out of my way for them.
Does Aldi ever do big avocados? I don’t much like that store, but I have gone there during good deals on avocados. I’ve only found small ones there, though. Last week I got four for $1 at the Mpls Farmer’s Market. They were quite ripe, but that was great because I just halved them and froze them immediately. Like Carrie, I like to use them in smoothies. I can’t eat fresh bananas, but I do 1/2 avocado, a big bunch of the organic baby spinach from Costco (it’s much sweeter taster than big spinach) a big bunch of the Costco wild frozen blueberries, some soymilk, some plain non-fat yogurt and some frozen mango chunks from Trader Joes. A very reasonable and yummy breaktfast : ) But I only get the avocados when I can get them pretty cheap. I’m hoping to get 4 for $1 at my Farmer’s Market quick trip tomorrow! Will someone post if they have big ones for this price – especially if they are the Hass variety…
We buy Aldi’s baked beans all of the time. They have transitioned to a new supplier this year and the new supplier is very similar to Bush’s. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
My 1year old nephew could not get enough of the Aldi “Homestyle” baked beans. Gobbled em up at my last BBQ!
is Aldi’s a coupon friendly store? Do they accept Internet coupons? I have some California avocado coupons that are soon to expire. One coupon is a $1/2. Since 2 avocados will cost $.98, will they take the $1/2 q??
No, Aldi doesn’t accept coupons.
My husband loves the aldi baked beans just as much as the Bush ones and he is rather picky.
We eat the Aldi baked beans. They have small cans which comes in only one variety, but they have a bigger can that comes in different varieties like Bush’s. You should try them. If they aren’t quite what you are looking for, just add a little sugar or other spices. I think they are great!
I love to use avocados on salads and sandwiches. My favorite salad is very easy to make, I bring the supplies and whip one up for lunch at work. Spinach, strawberries, avocados and balsamic dressing…yum! Also good with walnuts if you like them!
Just be crazy Carrie and buy the baked beans :) You’ve got nothing to lose. If you don’t like them, bring back the can, say they tasted like bunk, and they’ll give you your money back AND you can probably grab a different flavor. Just go for it girl :)
OK, ok… I’ll take the $0.59 plunge :)
I still think you should try Mike’s Discount Foods in Fridley. It’s a drive but quite a deal at times. I know Cub has a great deal on chicken this week, but you can only get 4 packs with the BOGO. Mike’s had 24 oz boneless skinless all natural chicken breasts for $3.99 each. Granny Smith apples were .69 a pound. Organic grapes were .69 a pound. Bananas .39 a pound, a 10# bag of potatoes was $2, etc. I think most of the other produce was .99 a pound. Bags of spinach were .50 each. If you spend $50, you get 10% off your entire purchase.
They do not take coupons.
Mikes also has tortilla chips for Buy One Get One Free right now – making them 50cents each. There is one in Anoka and Columbia Heights.
Did you know that you can buy ground beef in bulk at Sam’s Club. Just ask for the case price (which changes on Wednesdays). A case contains eight 10 lb rolls (80 lbs total). It’s very easy to split with a friend or two and if you go ahead and fry it up when you purchase it and then freeze it, a lot of time is saved in the kitchen later.
This last weekend Sam’s Club in Madison, WI had the 90% lean for $1.99/lb by the case. That’s still above my buy price since I’ve gotten it for $1.49/lb before (which I beileve was in the late winter/early spring time).
Melissa,
Thanks for the info. I just recently found out you could buy meat buy the case. I called to get a price quote on chicken in July and they told me I could buy it by the case. This is awesome!! I have a big family so this is much cheaper. BTW I only buy 90% lean or less. Can’t stand the fat and gritt in the others. Plus it goes further.
MIchelle,
do you mind sharing what price you got quoted on the chicken by the case? I’m curious because we go through about 1-2lbs of meat a day! It gets so expensive to buy nice quality chicken and beef when you go through so much! Thanks!
Last time I bought a case of boneless, skinless chicken breasts from Sam’s it was $1.49/lb — that was about 6 months ago. I’m planning on buying another one soon. I pressure can a lot of it and freeze the rest.
