Join me on August 4th when I speak at the Winner’s Luncheon about the intersection of social media and leadership. I’m honored to be invited to speak, as this is a monthly event whereprevious speakers have included Al Lindner, Minnesota’s most famous angler; Erik Paulsen, US Representative from 3rd District Minnesota; Richard K. Davis, President and Chief Executive Officer. U.S. Bank; Jeff Siemon, 4-time Pro Bowl linebacker with the Minnesota Vikings; and Walter Bond, Former University of Minnesota and NBA star. The luncheon happens to be held in a church facility, but is a non-religious, non-proselytizing event where each month’s speaker illuminates leadership principles that can be applied to the workplace.
Social Media and Leadership
My topic is inspired by a memory I have from a time when I was Chief Operating Officer for a Minneapolis-based non-profit. Someone from the marketing department began saying “we should blog” and “we should be on Twitter.” I didn’t understand how those things fit into our business objectives, let alone the technical components of how to do them. My mind raced to the risks of staff spending an unusually large portion of time tweeting with little return on investment. Plus, I always asked, “What would we talk about?” Yes, I wanted us visible in these new marketing channels, but my line of thought was off-base. I was a leader with little understanding of social media.
Ironically, that marketing person that introduced me to the concept of blogging also encouraged me to blog personally, which I started to do in March 2009 when I launched PocketYourDollars.com. In the sixteen months since its launch, PocketYourDollars.com has received almost 2 million visits from more than a half million people and been mentioned on Yahoo! Finance, FoxBusiness, Wall Street Journal Radio and will be in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Redbook, and Woman’s Day magazines this fall.
I look back and laugh now at the things I didn’t know as COO when we had the conversations about how our organization could use social media.
On August 4th I’ll share some of what I’ve learned in my journey that I hope will help you with yours.
