Aldi Shopping List 7/25 – 7/31/10

I was glad to see an Aldi ad in my paper after they took last week off and didn’t have much on sale when I stopped in.In addition tot he few produce deals included in the list below, I noticed that they are starting to advertise their lunchbox-type items: individual applesauce cups, single packs of raisins, granola bars, and string cheese. I’d expect that we’ll see more sales on those types of items, along with corresponding coupons for name brand products, in the weeks ahead.

First-time Aldi shoppers, you’ll need to bring a quarter (not 25 cents, but a quarter) for the refundable deposit on your cart and bring your own grocery bags. They take cash or debit card, but not credit card. Find an Aldi near you. If you don’t live near an Aldi, but can get your hands on an ad remember that Target and Walmart will price match equivalent produce items (if sold in the same quantity, packaging, etc.) and Walmart will price match generics if they carry a Great Value brand in the same size/quantity.

If it helps you appreciate Aldi a little more, read Wikipedia’s article about them and learn that Aldi is owned by the parent company that owns Trader Joe’s. Don’t forget Aldi’s double guarantee too, where you will get a replacement product AND a refund if you are not 100% satisfied.

Your turn: Do you buy produce in bulk and freeze or can it?

Produce

Cherries. $1.29/lb. This is a really good price on cherries.

Red and Green Grapes. $0.79/lb, sold in 2-pound clam shell for $1.58.

Strawberries. $0.99 per pound. The last few times strawberries have been on sale for $0.99/lb I have purchased 4-6 pounds, then sliced and frozen them. We hope to keep stocking up a little bit at a time so as we move into the fall we have some frozen fruit on hand for baking, topping pancakes, mix-ins with oatmeal and cereal and smoothies.

I am passionate about helping people keep their money where it belongs - in their pocket. I live in Minneapolis, MN with my husband and two little girls.

Can anyone report whether the grapes are imported or grown in the US?

The red seedless grapes say “Produce of USA” on them.
They are REALLY good – small & nice and firm.
Not a soggy one in the bunch I got today!!

Thanks Kristin, that’s great! I’m trying to keep my family away from the ‘dirty dozen’ which includes IMPORTED grapes. off to Aldi I go…

The grapes I got last night are WONDERFUL! And they were priced at only $0.99 for a 2 lb package!!!!!

Not grocery, but: Aldi has socks $3.99 for six — which is less than thrift store prices.

Thanks for the suggestion of freezing strawberries. I bought 4 packs, cut up and froze 2 and have enjoyed the other 2 packs throughout this week. I’m tempted to go back to Aldi tomorrow and buy more, but I unfortunately have limited freezer space.
