Local Deals: Free Fishing Weekend, Red Balloon Bookshop, and More

This deal has expired and may no longer be valid.

For more information on deals/events for our Twin Cities readers, click “Local Deals” under “Deals & Freebies” above.

Alive After 5 Concert Series. This free concert series is full of performances nearly every weekday in June at Peavey Plaza in Downtown Minneapolis. Food and beverages are available for purchase, and they also have acoustic performances called Tunes at Noon. For a schedule of performances and more information, just go here.

Take-A-Kid-Fishing Weekend. Minnesota residents age 16 and older can fish for free June 11-13 when they accompany an angler age 15 and under. (Granted, if you already have a fishing license like I do, it’s not really a deal.) Go to the Minnesota DNR website for suggestions on places to go and activities to do, plus find out information about fishing rules and regulations.

Minnesota Children’s Museum. The new Wizard of Oz exhibit opens June 12, so the museum is sponsoring free metro transit rides (buses and light rail) to and from the Museum on June 12 and 13 from 8am-6pm. Download your metro transit pass here. Museum hours are 9am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $8.95/person, museum members and children under age 1 are free.

Midwest Mountaineering. If you’re an outdoorsman or outdoorswoman, check out the clinics at Midwest Mountaineering in Minneapolis. You can participate in free canoe or kayak demos (my husband would love this) or listen to information about traveling the world, the BWCA, Canada, and more. Many clinics are free or just $5. You can also go climbing in their bouldering cave for free anytime.

The Red Balloon Bookshop. This bookstore in St. Paul offers free story times for babies, preschoolers, and toddlers (on separate days) at 10:30am every Tuesday through Thursday. They also have free author appearances, demonstrations, and crafts for kids. Check their events listing to get an idea of what’s coming up next.

Your turn: Have you been to any of these events/places before? I (Laura) am interested in checking out The Red Balloon Bookshop and would love to hear what others think of it.

  1. Minnesota Sinfonia concert @Caponi Art Park in Eagan 6:30 pm Sunday (the 13th).

  2. Shannon says:

I use to live directly across the street from the Red Balloon. I didn’t have any kids then, but I still loved it. It is small, but great. When I lived on Grand there were 3 privately owned bookstores. Now the big boys rolled in and Red Balloon is still hanging in there. I imagine they need all the support they can get.
