Discovery Channel Store: Planet Earth DVDs 80% Off and Other Clearance

This deal has expired and may no longer be valid.

The Discovery Channel Store is having a huge summer blowout clearance sale now through July 18. The graphic on their home page says “up to 65% off” but I found things as much as 90% off.My buy price for gifts, and really for most everything, is 75% off retail price. I was pleased to see a lot of DVDs in that range and under $10.

Free shipping. If you find a lot that you like, you can use the code FS59 at checkout to get free shipping.

Start thinking about who is on your Christmas list and use this month of clearance deals to your advantage. Here are a couple of my favorite clearance finds, but really I would love to have the entire Planet Earth series, even though I mention just one here.

Your turn: What did you find? What occasion are you buying for?

Planet Earth

Planet Earth: Pole to Pole, Mountains & Deep Ocean Blu-ray Disc is $4.99 or 80% off its regular price of $24.99. This is an exclusive t the Discovery Store and I’m eager to watch it (getting it for my husband for Christmas). These videos are SOOO cool. Sigourney Weaver narrates this video that shows amazing, National Geographic-like, footage of the following places.

Pole to Pole
Follow the sun as it touches the lives of creatures across the planet, bringing a fresh understanding of how the world is interconnected. From African herds migrating hundreds of miles in search of water to desperate animal hunts, Pole to Pole examines how the seasons produce the greatest spectacles on Earth.

Mountains
Tour the planet’s mightiest mountain ranges and meet the rare animals that inhabit them. From a never-before-seen hunt by snow leopards on the treacherous slopes of the Himalayas to a family of pumas struggling to survive the unstable weather of the Andes, Mountains reveals life on the planet’s highest peaks.

Deep Ocean
Explore the depths of the planet’s oceans and discover some of this mysterious world’s most spectacular species. From light shows performed by squids to the blue whale, the largest animal to ever exist, Deep Ocean investigates the waters that cover two thirds of the Earth’s surface yet remain largely unknown.

Last One Standing

Last One Standing is also $4.99, which is 90% off its regular price of $29.99. This is 8 hours of DVDs that document six courageous athletes who live and train with the world’s most remote indigenous tribes in a raw and intense array of tribal games and rite of passage ceremonies. From death-defying Zulu stick fighting in South Africa to an arduous foot race in the Mexican mountains, watch these men push their physical and mental limits to see who will be the last warrior standing.

I found this summary of the highlighted places on their website:

Brazil
Join the competitors in the Brazilian jungle, as they wrestle Kalapalo warriors at the Festival of Death – a competition for village honor.

South Africa
Journey to South Africa as the athletes live in the traditional village of Nqekwane and take on the Zulus in the deadly sport of stick fighting.

Mexico
Follow the men into the Copper Canyon region of northwest Mexico for a marathon-length race against Tarahumara Indians – some of the greatest natural endurance runners in the world.

Nagaland
Travel to Nagaland, a remote area of northeast India and watch the competitors train to become Aki Kiti fighters – vicious martial artists whose weapons are the soles of your feet.

Mongolia
The men get put to the test, living as Mongolian nomads and taking part in a local Nadaam competition, the greatest of all Mongolian sporting and cultural events.

Trobriand Islands
Voyage to the island of Kiriwina during the heart of the Mila Mala, the local harvest festival, as the athletes play in a tribal “cricket” match between two rival villages.

Senegal
Join the athletes as they take on the locals in Senegalese wrestling. Only two men will compete, but they must first avoid serious injury – something easier said than done.

Papua New Guinea
Meet the Sepik – a jungle tribe of Papua New Guinea – then, watch the men compete in their biggest canoe race of the year. To succeed, they must to learn to sleep in snake-ridden shelters and survive crocodile-infested waters.

Kraho
Travel to central Brazil as the athletes take part in the unusual sport of log racing. As part of a ceremony called the Witi, the teams of runners compete to carry a log to the sacred center.

Peru
Visit one of the world’s highest communities – the village of Paqchanta and watch the athletes take part in the Qoyllur Rit’i festival – a local race to cut a block of ice from a glacier at over 17,000 feet.

Java
Discover the rural Indonesian village of Cikaramat, in West Java, as the athletes learn the tribes’ local sport of Pencak Silat – a raw and deadly form of combat.

Vanuatu
Join the athletes on a tiny island in Vanuatu as they face their toughest endurance task, a seaborne canoe race between islands that pits them against battling trade winds, storms, sharks, high waves and fierce locals.

This isn’t my kind of movie, but I bet my husband would love it if I got this for him too, wouldn’t yours?

  1. Sarah says:

Thanks Carrie! I just purchases some items for Christmas gifts! You can’t beat the price.

  2. Brian says:

Just so you know Carrie, you can get the entire Planet Earth set(11 episodes) on blu-ray for 27.51 shipped from Amazon UK. This is the Richard Attenborough one, so I believe it is much better after hearing both of them.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Planet-Earth-Complete-BBC-Blu-ray/dp/B000SKNIWE/

It will play just fine in US players(majority of BD discs are region free) and takes about 7 days to arrive. Ordered mine and my brother’s set from there and had 0 issues. When you try to check out, it will ask if you want to convert currency from pounds to dollars and it charges to your card as dollars so there is no currency conversion fee.

I am definitely getting Planet Earth for Eli – he’ll love it!
