Walgreens Shopping List 4/25 – 5/1/10

This deal has expired and may no longer be valid.

It’s a great week at Walgreens this week, as you can get eight, count ‘em, eight different deals for free or better than free after using coupons and Register Rewards. Look for deals on maxi pads, shave cream, body wash, packaging tape, and much more.

If you’re new to all of this, then learn how the Register Rewards program works and learn how to read this shopping list.

Remember that this is a starting list of deals for the week. As readers leave comments with bargains they found at their local store, we get emails with deal ideas, or we read about other deals across the blogosphere, we will update this list. Items that are added throughout the week will be noted as NEW. Items whose final price changes as a result of a new or modified coupon scenario will be noted as UPDATED. At least once this week we will send out a reminder to come back and check this list for the hottest new deals.

Helpful hint: Walgreens is the one store where an advertised sale like “2 for $4” usually requires you to buy two products. The first one rings at full price and the second product will ring at a lesser price to bring the total to $4, using our example. If you ever question whether you need to buy two to receive a sale price, ask the cashier to scan one item for you. If it rings at full price, then you know you need to buy two products. If it rings at the sale price, then you don’t.

Your turn: What other deals did you find at Walgreens this week?

Comments

  1. Mary says:

Off link is having tech. difficulties and not working

  2. Dawn M says:

Is there still a rebate for Land O Lakes spread if you buy smart balance? I thought there was one awwhile back but not sure if valid? Thanks for the list…how did you do this so early? Connections at Walgreens? :-)

    • Laura Wales says:

Dawn – Yes, that rebate is still valid. I’ll update the list. As for the list being early, did you know that you can sign up for sneak peeks of the Walgreens ads? Just go here and look in the lower right hand corner for a spot to enter your email address. They usually send the email out sometime on Friday.

  3. Rachel says:

HELP! The last two weeks that I went to walgreens, only one of my two register rewards didn’t print out (I didn’t use any register rewards to pay either!). Two weeks ago it was the tylenol/sudafed deal (free after $5 coupon and $5 RR) and this week it was the huggies pull-ups (8.99-$2mfg coupon-$2RR). Any ideas why? The girl that rang me up said that sometimes it doesn’t work when you use a mfg. coupon. Is there a phone number that you can call? I’m getting tired of Walgreen’s… I really don’t want to return the items, but I don’t want them at the price w/o the RR either! TIA

    • Jessica F says:

      Rachel,
I gave up Walgreens long ago but was tempted by this week’s list. I am so glad I read your post and remembered why I don’t shop there anymore.

    • Mary says:

In the future I’d advise you do not leave the store without speaking to the manager. They are usually willing to get you your RR $ by running the transaction again to get the RR or giving you a giftcard for the $.

      • Teresa says:

Have to say last time my RR didn’t print, the Assist Manager was ringing me up. He took my name & info. & promised to send me the RR. After a couple of weeks of not hearing, I called him (luckily I wrote down his name when I got the my car). He said he’d send out a check. A couple of weeks later when no check appeared, I called him again (it’s was $4 and I was irritated)…he was out of the office, but I spoke to someone when said they would send out a gift card. After all that, the gift card did arrive (they added an extra $2). After all that I’m embarrassed to go back to that store (closest to me – even though I know I did nothing wrong). So, I’m also a past Walgreens shopper. I actually have rarely had a “clean” transaction at Walgreens…usually I just bite the bullet.

    • Jennifer M. says:

I second Mary’s reply. It doesn’t happen to me frequently, but when it does, I take care of it in the store and have never had a problem with them making it right (that goes for all 4 of the Walgreen’s I shop at). All but one time it was their issue, but the one time it was my mistake I just returned the item and they had no problem with me doing that and it was quick and easy, no hassles.

    • mollie says:

I have to say, I really do have to figure things out and know what I’m getting back, but it has worked for me. I’m pretty new at this, and didn’t get the RR for the 2 boxes of tampax I bought. I spoke to the mgr, and he said it should have been done in two sep. transactions, 1 per customer, but gave me the RR anyway, and it was my fault, on this one. I did have trouble with the benedryl last week, but the majority of them are right. I guess it depends on if it’s worth if financially to put up with a little hassle or not. *laffs* for me it is, right now in this point of my life. A few years ago, working 60 hours a week? No way.

  4. Jenny says:

Carrie, do you think the Hawaiian Tropic deal is great? What do you consider a great price for that type of stuff?

  5. Jenny says:

    Tone q isn’t working :(

  6. Dawn M says:

Not able to get the Tone to work either? :-(

  7. Kierstien says:

Okay I have not done wags in a long time but I am going to this week since I have bayer coupons left and this would work great to buy the meters then roll the rwards into the other deals for lots of free stuff for me!!! What time does wags open sunday morning?

  8. shannon says:

I have been frustrated with walgreens as well. They are sold out of everything by monday. I asked a cashier about it last night and he said people go in there Sun morn and buy everything. I think that is very selfish. And frustrating for those of us who do not live in the cities and can hit more than one location.

    • Kristin says:

I often go Sunday because that’s when it works out best for me to go. They are sometimes out of things, sometimes not. I have never seen anyone hoarding, buying tons of one product, or doing multiple transactions. Alot of the time the really good deals, with the RR, are limited to 1 anyway. The stores just don’t carry a ton of any one product, so of course the things that are really good deals are going to sell out quicker. I have had stores get shipments in during the week when I’ve checked back, but you can’t count on that.

    • Kim says:

I haven’t had a problem getting rainchecks (my local Wags is new and VERY small). They also have offered to have it shipped in from a different store if I wanted, because they don’t even carry a lot of sale items due to size. They have called me when my raincheck item comes in to come pick up at my convenience and they keep it behind the front counter so it is sure to be there. Just a suggestion to try if they are out of stock when you go in….I usually don’t go on Sunday and they are usually out of what I’m looking for.

    • Kristi says:

they are ALWAYS out of most things! I think it is ordering issues, if they have a sale they should be stocked a lot of times I don’t think they had any stock before the sale!

  9. Dawn M says:

My husband went to Walgreens to finish up shopping and to ask about the 5.00 RR we didn’t get for Bayer. He set the list I had typed up earlier this week on the conor and the manager took it with the rect. He came back and said there was nothing they could do for the missing RR. Then was drilled on where he got his list? He said my wife types it so it’s easier as writing gives me cramps and can use some of carries and then my own not so good deals! They had already taken signs down and had none up so he couldn’t get any of the previous sales and they weren’t set up for the next weeks deals. They were rude and he said they treated him like he was a criminal! I have to say Walgreens customer service is not good and like CVS more. So leasson to be learned. What doesn’t make sense to me is what difference what it is we buy as they get money for coupons and they have a customer!!!!! I do hate going to them as they all do it different.

Either they are out of items or they don’t have them marked or the RR don’t print or they don’t want to take manufacture coupons with their coupons. Not sure the deals are worth it.

    • Kristin says:

That’s too bad. I have actually had Managers at a couple locations apologize to me for the problems. I guess I am lucky that the 3 I have all within a close radius of my house are good stores for the most part.

  10. Kierstien says:

Wags Question: Okay if I have 3 of the same rr can use all three to pay for a transaction? For ex this week say i go seperate times and buy 3 monitors and get 3 $10 rr then purchase items totaling $30 (ofcourse 3or more items) can i pay w/all 3 rr’s? thanks!

  11. Lisa says:

I just have to drop in and say I love Walgreens. I didn’t really shop there until I found this website and learned how to get such great deals. I always go to the same one, and the ladies that work there are SO nice. They always make sure that all my coupons go through. Yes, sometimes they do run out of certain items, but doesn’t every store?

  12. Flannel Guy says:

I find it strange that “Rick” and “Kierstien” (VERY dissimilar names) write the exact same post 8 hours apart.

  13. joe says:

It seems my local Walgreens never has the advertised sale items, especially the free RR ones.I have been at their doorstep when they first open on Sunday, and items are not there.I know for a fact that no other customers have walked in before I have.I found a RR sale items hidden on a top shelf,I had to use my cane to get it.They had told me item must be sold out.but they lied.

  14. Mollie says:

I just have to get this off my chest, because a few weeks ago, I saw another deal for blood sugar monitors that was a money maker, with comments about buying them and donating them. Almost anyone with good insurance can get one for free, and those who are in enough financial difficulties can get them from one of the nonprofits around town who help people with diabetes. The majority of folks are right smack in the in between category, and it’s not like a tube of toothpaste that costs $1.99 that you can buy everywhere. Chances are, if you’re a diabetic and need a monitor, you’re going to be watching the sales and saving the coupons, and trying to buy it as cheaply as possible. And there is a better than good chance that Walgreens isn’t stocking it as if they are paying everyone $10.00 to buy one. They usually only have a small amount of monitors to start with. Please try to be considerate of those who legitimately may need the product. (And it’s often hereditary – you don’t have to have a ‘bad’ lifestyle to get diabetes.)

    • Rebecca says:

Furthermore, the Walgreens circular states “Available only to uninsured patients and patients whose meters are not covered by insurance or a discount program.”

    • Penny says:

      Mollie,

I would suggest that you speak to the manager at your WAGS and call corporate to let them know that they need to stock larger quantities of the meters when they are part of a sale or rr deal. I have purchased quite a few in the past 9 months and donated them…I do this in the name of an incredible young woman I know who has Juvenile Diabetes…daughter of a very dear friend.

I am very aware that diabetes can be hereditary….so please don’t assume. I also know there are plenty of uninsured who appreciate the donation. Wags is retailer…focus onchanging the way they stock these items…that could create positive change.

      • Penny says:

Penny, Rebecca’s statement says it all. And I’m afraid all are not so alturistic as yourself. I am quite certain there are any number of monitors that have been donated, but there are probably those who have/will have monitors from this deal or past deals who have no idea where to donate them to get them into the right hands, or who just haven’t gotten around to donating them. As well as those who have no intention of donating. And there are probably those who didn’t think to donate the RR’s as well, since it didn’t cost them anything, perhaps to help cover a smidge of the non insured supplies/treatments that can run into the hundreds of dollars per month for a diabetic (as long as they were thinking about people in need.) If anyone still has a meter you’d like to donate, I know you can check with your county, you can check with local nursing homes, they are always in need, and also with a number of associations, including the American Diabetes Association. http://www.diabetes.org/ Perhaps you have another suggestion, Penny?

        • Penny says:

          Penny,

Bills Pantry in Mpls will take the diabetic meters…along with over the counter medicines…they help families and individuals with aids. Many of the local food shelves will transfer these items to Bill’s Pantry.

It never crossed my mind that someone would buy the meter to get the free rr’s and not donate it. My 5 year old son and I have collected more than $3000 in food, medicines, personal care products etc..for free since September 2009 and donated it all. I want him to understand that we all need to take care of each other…when he was helpng me gather our last donation he handed me two boxes of his favorite cereal “mom I want to donate these!”

I love that I’ve been able to save on our monthly food/household supply budget, but the opportunity to give has been the true gift.

Before they took down the packing tape coupon I printed 6 coupons…picked up six free scotch packing tapes..now I’m looking for a local organization that sends care packages to soldiers…my dad was a WWII veteran…soldiers are near and dear to my heart…so if anyone knows of an organization like this..or group please let me know.

          Penny

          • Mitzie says:

            Penny,
Crossroads Church in Cottage Grove has a “Touch of Home” ministry where they send care packages to military personnel. I’m sure they would love the tape donation.

  15. Dawn M says:

There is a skintimate cpn in the 3/28 cpns for 1.50 off making it an even better deal.

  16. Dawn M says:

The coupon for the Off is experiencing tech difficulties. Anyone else having trouble?

  17. Emily says:

Tone Body Wash is out of coupons for this campaign. Still only 99 cents for body wash, though.

  18. Dawn M says:

Thanks Sue good catch. I guess it was a little early in the morning for me. Glad you caught that but it will still help. thanks much

  19. Kristin says:

These were some of the in store prices at my Wlagreens (versus the on-line price):
    Children’s Motrin was $6.99
    Children’s Benydryl was $7.49
Chidren’s Zyrtec was $12.99 (perfect measure was more, which is what the $1.50 coupon is for)

    • Lisa M says:

Check different Walgreens for different prices on the Childrens Motrin. Shannon Pkwy in Rosemount had it for $6.99, but the one in Cliff Rd in Eagan, had it for the $5.99 price.

  20. Wren says:

Found a deal on gum I’d thought I’d share.

Stride Shift single packs are on sale 2 for $2. (only the shift kind is on sale)

Buy 3 packs of gum for $3
Use the $1/2 from the May coupon book (for some reason my store took $1.50 off of 3)
Use the B2G1 from 3/14 SS (took off $1.29)
Final Price: $0.24 each (maybe lower if your store takes $1.50 off)

Dentyne Gum single packs are on sale 2 for $2

Buy 2 packs of gum for $2
Use the $1/2 from the May coupon book
Use the $1/2 from 2/28 SS
    Final Price: Free
(the SS coupon expires today so this deal is only good for today)

    • Lisa M says:

Thanks Wren, I went back to Walgreens after reading your gum deal… How did you find out the gum is on sale? I didn’t see in the book and the shelf price wasn’t marked. So spent $.71 total on 3 Stride and .14 on 2 Dentynes.

So $.85 total for 5 packs of gum- Pretty good!!

      • Wren says:

I just kind of stumbled on it, my Walgreens had one of the Stride Shift flavors marked and all of the Dentyne marked. So I asked one of the girls to check the other Shift flavor and yep it was on sale too.

Most of the people I’ve heard from didn’t find it marked at their Walgreens.

        Glad I could share.

Thanks Wren! I got 3 packs of Stride Shift for 50cents!!!

The Dove Ultimate anti-perspirant coupons don’t work on the $2.49 one on the Walgreens coupon… It has to just be the regular ones… I keep TRYING to use these coupons and haven’t yet found a deal I can get it to work with…

  22. rochelle says:

Walgreens was completely out of the KotexU and Stayfrees this morning. Only a few Skintimates left. Said someone cleaned them out of the pads right away this morning. Nice. Got one pack at another location.
The Benadryl etc coupon of save 5$ off two products wouldn’t print my RR. Two different managers had to be called and it was a fiasco…took a while to get through it all. Glad I got them for free and will definitely be using them…go figure that the vet prescribes it for the dogs for allergies. :-)

    • Angela says:

      So does our vet!

    • Penny says:

      My vet too.

    • mollie says:

My vet has had me give Benedryl to the dog after surgeries…to calm him down so he won’t pull the stiches. My son takes it to help him get to sleep, I take it for allergies. Also keep it in my purse in case anyone has an allergic reaction to bee sting, plants, etc. *laffs* I’m probably the only person who takes it as intended!

  23. Donna says:

I went to Walgreens today, and I saved $29.97. Can you tell that I bought all six packing tapes? :) We’re moving, so it was a must-have. Thanks for all you do!!

  24. Penny says:

I purchased 6 of the packing tapes also…anyone know of a group or organization that packs care packages for soldiers? I want to donate the packing tape.

  25. Sara says:

The Tone coupon prints is out.

  26. Z says:

3-packs of No-nonsense socks were $4.99. With the BOGO and the $1 off 2 I ended up paying $3.99 for 6 pairs of socks.

I wanted to comment about the Walgreens that I was at yesterday. Our daughter lives in Wacoina and I rarely get to a Walgreens to get these great deals so I was giddy to be able to get in on the freebies this week.
But I learned at this Walgreens if you use a coupon with a RR item that the RR don’t print out…now maybe that is why some of the folks feel they don’t get them and the sales person helping you doesn’t know that…the one I had was very nice and told me right away. I had kept track and noitced that two were missing….so very nicely he returned the two items and my coupons and rang the items back up and bingo I my RR printed out! :)
So my question is then do some Walgreens take coupons with those free RR items? They must since Carrie mentions to do it? Do they take coupons for RR items that are not free then??
Oh and every item was there that was free….they even had them all together in a display so I picked up all four freebies from the back page of their ad in one stop of the cart!~ Sweet!
Good luck at Walgreens~ I know I sure LOVED it!!! I only wish I could get there every week.

  28. Amber says:

FYI, the Playtex coupons are out of print.

I went to Walgreens today and made $1.48 off 26 items and 8 cards! (The $1.48 is factoring in the Walgreens Register Rewards).

I was trying to find cards for .49 each and the cheapest card I could find was .89. Did anyone else have any luck finding cards at .49??

    • Valerie Y says:

I don’t think they sell them for .49 any more–except at Dollar Tree, they are 2/$1 there. All the cheapest Hallmark ones I could find were .99. I found one and one only, that was .89 and it was so small I thought it would get lost in the mail. Still, $3 for 8 cards is a wonderful deal. It’s so nice that they are doing this register reward deal this week I might go back and get some more cards later this week.

      • Laura Wales says:

Valerie – That’s what I figured, too: $3 for 8 cards is great! Some people have found the $0.49 cards at the bottom of the $0.99 section – I didn’t look closely enough yesterday to check.

  29. Rhonda says:

If you have your Nature’s Bounty $5 off coupon left from the rewards site, you can use 2 of them for the B1G1 Nature’s Bounty sale this week. I purchased 2 fish oil pills for $10.99 and used 2 coupons and only paid $1.78 for both with tax….the assistant manager rang it through for me so it’s legitimate to do!!!! Side Note: If you have the $2 off coupon they do have a few vitamins for $6 to $7 so you would pay $2 for two bottles of those.

  30. megan says:

I think it depends completely on your store. My CVS has never had any of the freebies on Sunday. Ever. They can give you a rain check, but 2 weeks later – still out. My Walgreens rocks. They always have everything. I do carefully review coupons and policies and never try funny business and it always works out.

    • jo says:

      Megan-
I have just the opposite – My Wags never has the product and my CVS always has it. The manager and casgiers at Wags are horrendous and cringe when I go in just hoping to have no provblems, Whereas at CVS they bend over backwards and help me 100%. They even have pointed out things I have missed on clearance deals.

  31. Angela says:

Scotch took down the coupon for the single roll of packaging tape.

  32. Jill B says:

Hello- 2 things: Maybe I’m missing something… I don’t think we can do the Hallmark deal with the .49 or .99 cards as the coupon is for Hallmark cards which are 1.50 or higher?

And- I think I’ve shared before… I just love my Lake Street (Mpls) Walgreens! Today my cashier asked me if I’d like to separate my items into 2 transactions so I could get the most out of RR/ deals. :) And- yes, they’re often out of some RR items, yet they do keep a display in the front of RR deals and today still had everything stocked!

    • Laura Wales says:

Jill – You don’t have to use the in-ad coupon to get the Register Reward; it’s just available to use for the higher-priced cards. I bought 8 $0.99 Hallmark cards yesterday and a Register Reward printed with no issue.

  33. Lori-Jo says:

I had a problem with this deal on Sunday.
Buy 2 participating Sudafed, Benadryl, Tylenol, or Zyrtec products, Get $5 Register Reward

    ***Deal idea #1***
Buy 2 Sudafed, Benadryl or Tylenol products for $4.99 each
Use $5/2 from 4/11 Red Plum insert**
Spend $4.98, get $5 Register Reward back
Final price: Two free after coupon and Register Reward
**There was an issue using this coupon last time Walgreens ran this deal. The registers read the $5/2 coupon as a $5 Register Reward, so the Register Reward that should have been generated by this deal would not print. You can ask the cashier to enter the coupon manually or have the manager put the Register Reward value on a gift card.

So – when I was done I asked for a manager and he re-rang up my Sudafed and the RR printed. He seemed relucant to do so, but did accommodate me in the end.

    Thanks!

  34. Mary says:

Was the no nonsense deal posted in the ad? I couldnt’ find the socks at my Walgreens.

  35. Rachelle says:

For the Johnson & Johnson deal, cant I buy 2 of the ear swabs at 1.87(?) and use 2 $1.00 off coupons and spend 1.74 total and get the free first aid kit? Or does the product have to be above a certain price?

  36. Sandi says:

To Rachel – if u still have the receipt(s) from those items u did not get your register rewards for at Wags – - – call the # below and they will take the info from your receipt(s) & send u a check by U.S. mail.
It has happened to me twice when I was hurry & didn’t want to wait to speak to a manager.

    • Anne says:

Sandi, Thanks sooo much! I was resigned to the fact that I had missed out on the two $5 RR from Wags for the Tylenol promotion. I’d gone and talked to the manager of the store, and he said, sorry, once you walk out the door, there is nothing that can be done about it. This morning I mentioned to the clerk at a different Wags, and she said I should have asked there, because their manager does will accommodate the shopper quite frequently.

I told her I had resigned myself to the loss, and chalked it up as a learning experience. Then, here comes the number you gave, and after a nine minute conversation, the checks will be in the mail.!!!!

      Thanks!

  37. Lisa M says:

Did anyone else see a coupon a few weeks ago for a $25 gift card for a prescription, for Burnsville? It was Burnsville and (another city I can’t think of) for Grand Opening… And I think it was only in Walgreens ads near those cities… Well just wondering if it’s still valid? I can’t find it and wonder if I should keep looking or not, if it’s expired. Hope I didn’t recycle it if it’s still good. I already got a $25 gift card at CVS this week, so that’s out… And the RX has already been called to Walgreens…

  38. Stacy says:

My Wags (Cambridge) was out of most of the “free” with RR items. But I still managed to get $9 in RR from the items that were in stock.

  39. rochelle says:

Purex 3 in 1 sheets (20 count) were on sale for 4.99. I had $2 off coupons from one of the inserts making them $2.99.
