UPDATE: Local Deals Roundup: Computer Education for the Unemployed and More

This deal has expired and may no longer be valid.

**UPDATE: We received an email from the Science Museum staff amending the information we’d previously posted. Please look below for further clarification of the Science Museum Computer Education classes opportunity.

Here are some of the latest local deals we’ve found, some of them courtesy of our readers. Reminder: if you find out about a great deal and would like to share it with the Pocket Your Dollars’ community, feel free to let us know!

Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. Sign up for Chanhassen’s Birthday & Anniversary Club to receive a special dinner and show ticket discount during the month of your birthday and/or anniversary. Chanhassen offers other discounts, too, like Student Discounts for children ages 5-17.

Minnesota Children’s Museum and Walker Art Center. Many of you probably already know about this, but here’s a reminder, anyway. Target sponsors Target Free Thursday Nights at the Walker Art Center and Target Free Third Sundays at the Minnesota Children’s Museum.  This is an awesome way to take the whole family – grandmas, grandpas, and everybody out without breaking the bank.

**UPDATE** Science Museum Computer Education. If you or someone you know is currently unemployed, the Science Museum of MN offers free Computer Education classes for dislocated workers. These classes are intended to help increase employability through training in basic to advanced computer skills. Registrants will need to have their workforce counselor send an authorization form to secure their registration, according to the registration process. (Thanks, Missy!)

We received an email from the Science Museum staff with some amendments to this information. Please note:

  • There are five free public services classes (select “Free Public Service Classes” in the “Select a Subject Area” box) available for all people: Internet Basics-Overview, Job Hunting Online, Facebook Introduction, Family Genealogy-Internet, and Wireless Networking. Although these classes are free, registration is required.
  • Dislocated workers who are working with a counselor from the Minnesota Workforce Center may also be eligible for subsidized classes from the Science Museum’s Computer Education Center.

Shred-It Minneapolis. If you’ve been spring-cleaning your home office (as I just did this past weekend), you probably have a lot of papers that need to be shredded because they contain sensitive information. This Saturday (April 10), participating Cub Foods locations are offering a Community Shred Event from 9am-12pm. There is a two box limit for free shredding. Community Shreds are also held at various M&I Bank and TCF Bank locations throughout the year. Go to Shred-it to find an event near you. (Thanks, Aileen!)

Your turn: What other resources do you know of for dislocated workers?

  1. Chris says:

THANK YOU for listing the Shred-It opportunities around town. We own a shredder, but being able to take the two boxes periodically helps with the back-up of paper that tends to pile up. It is so very important in this day and age to shred most of the documents we have with our personal information on it. Identity theft is easily avoidable if you take simple precautions!

  2. Patty says:

The link to the five free public service classes isn’t working.

  3. Deb Jacobsen says:

VistaPrint has 250 free business cards for those who are unemployed (or anyone for that matter). There are 45 free designs to choose from so just about anyone should be able to find a style that they like in this batch. I used them so that I had cards to hand out with my name, title, and cell number during marketing/networking meetings.
