Local Deals Roundup: MOA Theatres, Free Haircuts, and More

This deal has expired and may no longer be valid.

One of the reasons I started reading Pocket Your Dollars (waaaaaaaay back when it started a year ago) was that I love finding out about good deals in the Twin Cities area. I’m always on the lookout for more! If you live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area, here are a few deals you can check out.

Lunds and Byerly’s. Sign up for the Lunds and Byerly’s e-newsletter to receive an email every Thursday previewing their weekly deals and a web-only coupon. E-newsletter recipients this week got a coupon for a free pound of bananas with a $10 minimum purchase. Last week it was a 12-pack of Cottonelle for $1.99. The web-only coupons are store coupons so you can use them alongside manufacturer-issued coupons for greater savings.

Mall of America Theatres. You can see a free family movie at the Mall of America every Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Be sure to get there early, as seating is first-come, first-served up to the theater capacity.

Minnesota Golf Card. If you’re a frequent golfer (or know one), you can purchase the 2010 Minnesota Golf Card for just $35. This card entitles you to four free rounds of golf (buy one, get one free) at each of the 150+ eligible courses across Minnesota. Read Carrie’s previous post on this deal to find out more details. Think Father’s Day…

Super Cuts Studio in Anoka. Adults and kids can get free (yes, free!) haircuts every month in Anoka. Email Valerie at supercutsstudiotwincities@gmail.com to find out the details. They accept walk-ins for certain dates and times each month (you’ll get the details in the email). It’s not a gimmick and no joke!

Valley Natural Foods. Valley Natural Foods in Burnsville offers printable online store coupons every week. They also have monthly co-op advantage specials and member-only specials listed on their website.

Your turn: If you’ve tried one or more of these deals, what tips do you have for other readers who want to try them?

I went to Byerlys in Burnsville last week ( my first time ever going there) I asked at customer service first if i could use the cottenelle lunds/byerlys cpn and a manuf cpn and he said yes so i got my items went to checkout and the cashier made a HUGE fuss over this and was like you cant use 4cpn for 3items ( i had bought 3packs of tp and had 3manuf and the 1 store cpn) I stated I asked at customer service and she very rudly told me she’d let it slide this time but from NOW ON i must choose which one i want to use. Has anyone else had experience like this there? She made me feel like i should be ashamed for using coupons there…very frusterating experience makes me not want to go back….feedback please :)

I bought the Prego and the Yoplait at the Burnsville store last week and the cashier had a bit of an attitude about my coupons. I go to this store every other week or so and have never had anything like it happen before. Maybe she was having a bad day. I like Byerly’s for certain items and they will sharpen up to 3 knives at a time for no charge (a great perk).

  2. Angela B says:

I haven’t tried the Byerly’s with doubling coupons, but I can tell you that the current price (regular or sale – whichever is on for that week) of the web-only deal counts toward the $10 minimum purchase. I have gotten some incredible deals with that knowledge!

  3. Angela B. says:

I have always had fantastic service at Byerly’s doing the web-only deals! The best part is that the price of the coupon item COUNTS toward the $10 minimum purchase!

Yeah I did have a problem with a Byerlys cashier who insisted that I couldn’t use a manufacturers coupon with a store coupon. It was a huge argument and had to insist that a manager come and explain it. Sure enough I got Bertoli pasta that week for 49 cents. The cashier didn’t like that I got something for almost free. Not my problem. Usually Byerly’s is great though!!!

  5. Karen says:

I have never had a bad experience at a Byerly’s. One time I forgot my web coupon (yes, I know, I should be ashamed of calling myself a couponer) and asked the manager if I could have the deal anyway. He said to just let him know if the cashier didn’t have on in their drawer and he’d take care of it. When I got to the cashier I explained the situation and she said it wasn’t a problem. I did use a manufacturer q with the store one for the toilet paper last week and no one batted an eye. If that happens again I would ask for a manager. I know if I was the manager I would want to know my cashiers were treating people like that.

  6. Melissa Engel says:

I love my Maple Grove Byerlys. I have never had a problem. I often do two transactions a week to get two of the free or major marked down item. Last week they had BOGO on several Kashi cereals and I had a coupon for one box free so I was able to use those to easily reach my $10 minimum.

My favorite day is to go on Mondays because they have a Caribou where I can get my “Happy Monday” $2 chai latte! Bonus!

  7. sheepy says:

I’ve never had a problem using Byerly’s store coupons with manufacturer’s coupons. I do often use the self serve checkout, and sometimes it alerts the manager that the coupon needs to be checked.

  8. sheepy says:

I wonder if the “free haircut” LOOKS like a free haircut? I’ve found that haircuts are something that are worth paying for unless you have long hair that just needs a trim. Or unless you are 7.

    • terri says:

Good point> You know the ‘ole saying..”You get what you pay for”. I guess the term”Buyer beware” comes to mind. At least it’s not major surgery, your hair will grow back.

  9. terri says:

Byerly’s/Lunds is all about customer service, they run their stores with the attitude that the customer is always right. Each store manager has the authority to make things right for the customer as they deem fit without having to answer to corporate or worry about “store policy”. I do work for Byerly’s, Cub, Rainbow, Coburns, Kowalski’s, and others, and given the option I would pick Byerlys/Lunds over ANY other company…too bad their pricing is not customer friendly.

  10. Stacy says:

For those in the northern metro area – Caryl and Co. in North Branch gives free haircuts on Tuesdays to job seekers.

  11. Kelly says:

I’m super excited about the free family movie at MOA! I know there is a theater in St. Michael that does this on Wednesdays. Maybe some of you up in that area would want to check it out.

  12. sheepy says:

Kelly, is that the Cinemagic? I went there once (I live in Burnsville but it was a new theater and I wanted to see it) and it was beautiful inside. If I lived near there, I’d probably go there a lot. And I believe they have a frequent movie-goer card, so for those who are paying for a film you gets points for free movies.

  13. Heather says:

Good to know about the Byerlys coupons. On Fridays they have Five Buck Cluck – $4.99 rotissere chicken that could go towards my $10 purchase.

I love shopping at Lunds and Byerly’s. There is a Lunds right near me and its so awesome. Their stores are perfectly manicured and their customer service can not be beat. I have never had a bad experience at any store and although I don’t use a lot of coupons there I’ve never had any problems with coupons when I do use them. I love their weekly Internet coupon and flyer. You can frequently get some good deals there and some yummy food samples. I have told several of my friends about signing up for their weekly newsletter and they love getting it in their inbox every Thursday. Yes their prices are a little higher on most things but its a wonderful shopping experience in my opinion and they have high quality food, meat, seafood and produce. Love their deli, chocolates and bakery too. I use the Community Room monthly and I frequent Caribou Coffee.

  15. Valerie says:

Thanks for the mention of the Supercuts Studio! I am the Artistic Director based out of the Twin Cities metro, and I am very excited to have such a great response from this website.

We hold advanced cutting workshops in our studios located across the country. Unlike a beauty school, the stylists who attend the classes are already licensed, and often have years of experience behind them. Having clients to work on in the class (as opposed to mannequins) helps us to ensure that each of our stylists provide EXCELLENT customer service as well as a quality haircut to EVERY customer.

    Thanks again!

I just got my free haircut at SuperCuts today and was very impressed! Not only was I well treated, but I was happier with this cut than I have been with any cut I’ve gotten recently at the upscale salon I have been going to. You may have to wait as it’s a walk-in system, but bring a book or some work to do and it’s well worth it!
