Aldi Shopping List 3/7 – 3/13/10

This deal has expired and may no longer be valid.

aldi

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Aldi! Their produce prices for a St Patty’s meal are rock bottom.

If you’ve never shopped at Aldi bring a quarter (not 25 cents, but a quarter) for the refundable deposit on your cart and bring your own grocery bags. They take cash or debit card, but not credit card. Find an Aldi near you.

Remember that Aldi is owned by the same folks that own Trader Joe’s, so you can keep your eyes peeled for organic products that might be Trader Joe’s overruns.

Your turn: In addition to the produce deals, they have Easter basket goodies and orchids on sale. I haven’t checked around yet. Are these decent prices?

Produce

Carrots. $0.49 for 2-pound bag of unpeeled, raw or 1-pound bag of baby carrots.

Onions.$0.59 for a 3-pound bag of white or 2-pound bag of sweet or yellow. You can dice and freeze onions to toss into other recipes later on. Cut them up, then lay flat on a cookie sheet and put into the frezer. Once frozen transfer them into a ziploc bag.

Cabbage. $0.79 per head

Red Potatoes. $0.79 for 5-pound bag

  1. Christy says:

Have you tried freezing cut up carrots? Would you pre-cook them before freezing?

    • Carrie Rocha says:

Christy – I have frozen carrots. I blanche them before freezing – that’s what you get when you buy a bag of them in the store.

      • Kim says:

I grate my carrots in a food processor and freeze in cereal bowls or silicone muffin pan, then pop those into freezer bags for additions to spag sauce, chili, and soups.

  2. Charla Lucibello says:

Christy, Long term, you might want to consider getting a dehydrator. Mixing all of these great sale items together makes great, instant crockpot meals. I dehydrate my carrots. check out http://www.dehydrate2store.com

  3. Anita says:

I did not know they were owned byt the same people as TJ. Has anyone ever found Trader Joe’s items there. i have been shopping at Aldi’s for at least 2yrs (not sure when the store opened) and have never seen TJ food items? Maybe I’m not looking in the right spot? HELP?

    • Carrie Rocha says:

Anita – I have seen organic soy milk, heard of people spotting organic yogurt and granola bars at various points in time.

    • Toni P. says:

They sometimes carry TJ’s Mandarin Orange Chicken, which is delicious and a steal compared to TJ’s price. It’s packaged a bit differently, but it’s the same product.

  4. Susie says:

When you cut up the onions and freeze them, do you ever have problems with other freezer items tasting/smelling like onion?

    • Carrie Rocha says:

Susie – I havea deep freeze with a little basket thingy. I keep onions all by themselves in the basket to avoid it.

    • Angie says:

I double wrap my onions chopped to avoid the smell b/c I only have a standard freezer

    • Chrissy says:

I have never had a problem with my other items smelling like onions.

    • Mindy says:

I mince onions and put them into ice cube trays, freeze them, and then put them into ziploc bags. Whenever I want to add onion to soup, stews, or casseroles I just take out a cube or two. I also do this with other leftover veggies. The veggie cubes can also be added to spaghetti sauce and the kids never notice them.

  5. Chrissy says:

The orchids are a good price. I bought some the last time they had them. The next best place is Walmart for $15-$19. Aldi’s are $9.99.

  6. julie says:

Yes the $9.99 for Orchids are a great price. I also noticed today Ikea had them for I believe $12.99 which is also a great price and they were absolutely gorgeous.

  7. Bernice says:

The Zhu Zhu pets @ $5.99 is a good deal. They are $7.99 at Target, much more at specialty stores at the local malls.

  8. Ginny says:

Has anyone come across any good buys on corned beef?
