Rainbow on Saturday had a ton of $1 GE CFL bulbs in the aisle
Home Depot also carries some but they are not GE name brand but some generic type

I was just at Target in West St. Paul and they had cfl lightbulbs back in the bulk area. They had boxes of seven bulbs 60 replacement that last for five years on clearance for 4.38 a box.They also had boxes of 3 flood light bulbs 65 replacement that last 6 years for 4.98 a box. Just thought this might help some one.

In the Elk River area a couple years back the electric company sent out coupons to use at Menards for these bulbs…I switch 8 back then, but in a 5 bedroom house I haven’t done them all yet. I did not see a change in electric from just those 8 bulbs.

The cfl’s should last 8-10 years…another great tip is to unplug anything you are not using. I saw this on Oprah…I think last year. There was a woman who did the cfl’s and unplugging and saved almost $200 on her monthly electric bills. Tv, computers, lamps, toasters…can’t remember the whole list. I’ll try to find this in the Oprah show archive and then post it.

has anyone actually checked the prices at any stores. The fine print says “as low as $1″. I will call some stores around me to check.

About three years ago there was a similar offer. I choose to outfit my entire apartment at the time in CFL’s. I spent about $35 doing that. I went from an average of $75 per month in electricity down to $22 a month. So the whole project paid for itself in less than a month, and I have never had to replace a bulb since.

Jeri, it doesn’t look like you need to do anything except reside in an Xcel Energy-serviced area. I think the prices are just discounted on the shelves.
