**Edit: I missed some of the fine print before when posting this deal. This is available for residential customers in Colorado, Minnesota, and New Mexico.
Xcel Energy electric customers nationwide in Colorado, Minnesota, and New Mexico can now buy energy-efficient CFLs for as little as $1 per bulb while supplies last. Look for bulbs that have the “Energy Star” label.
Limited quantities are available at a number of stores. Local stores include Ace Hardware, Costco, Cub Foods, Home Depot, Lunds/Byerly’s, Rainbow Foods, Sam’s Club, Target, and Walmart.
I tried a number of different zip codes across the nation to see if this deal worked outside of Minnesota, and it looks like it does, as long as your area is serviced by Xcel Energy. Find your closest location to purchase these discounted bulbs.
Your turn: If you use CFLs, how much have you saved in energy costs so far?

What do you have to do to get this deal? Do you bring in your Xcel Energy bill?
Jeri, it doesn’t look like you need to do anything except reside in an Xcel Energy-serviced area. I think the prices are just discounted on the shelves.
About three years ago there was a similar offer. I choose to outfit my entire apartment at the time in CFL’s. I spent about $35 doing that. I went from an average of $75 per month in electricity down to $22 a month. So the whole project paid for itself in less than a month, and I have never had to replace a bulb since.
Wow, Chris, that’s incredible!
Chris – You might inspire me, as I have yet to make the switch.
The cfl’s should last 8-10 years…another great tip is to unplug anything you are not using. I saw this on Oprah…I think last year. There was a woman who did the cfl’s and unplugging and saved almost $200 on her monthly electric bills. Tv, computers, lamps, toasters…can’t remember the whole list. I’ll try to find this in the Oprah show archive and then post it.
I can’t even imagine having an electric bill over $200 month…did they live in a manision in Beverly Hills.
has anyone actually checked the prices at any stores. The fine print says “as low as $1″. I will call some stores around me to check.
In the Elk River area a couple years back the electric company sent out coupons to use at Menards for these bulbs…I switch 8 back then, but in a 5 bedroom house I haven’t done them all yet. I did not see a change in electric from just those 8 bulbs.
We stocked up on CFLs at Target @ $1 ea. ~ used a mfr q & got them free!
I was just at Target in West St. Paul and they had cfl lightbulbs back in the bulk area.
