These are the best deals I see this week based on the Rainbow Foods ad (a Roundy’s store). It assumes you shop on Wednesday when they will double the face value of five coupons that are worth $1 or less. If you’d like more details on the rules around doubling check out this post.

Thanks to Mercedes at Common Sense with Money for her starting list of deals. Pocket Your Dollars is part of BeCentsable’s Grocery Gathering, a compilation of shopping lists for stores nationwide. On the meat and hamburger helper sale you have to pick one of the items you want to be free
Amanda – Duh! I’ll fix the list.
Thanks for the list, Carrie. Isn’t the big Quaker sale worthwhile (5 products for $7 with in-ad coupon) if we can find manufacturer coupons to go with it?
Also, for those of us that like the Yoplait Grande size yogurt, it’s on sale at Rainbow this week for $2 and it’s easy to get a 55 cent off coupon on the Yoplait site. (You click on products and then on the “large size” of yogurt) Even if it’s not doubled, that’s a good price on a high quality yogurt. I tried the new Roundy’s large plain yogurt recently, and thought it wasn’t very good.
Shelly – Personally, I don’t think the in-ad coupon is that great. But, I aim for no more than $1 per box of granola bars or cereal (oatmeal included). I plan to use the individual coupons and have those doubled because the out of pocket price is lowest.
Shelly – the in ad coupon for the Quaker deal is a manufacturer’s coupon, so you can’t use other coupons with it. It’s probably a better deal if you come up with your own coupons – like the printable one Carrie mentions earlier for oatmeal. There are some mqs out there for Aunt Jemima too.
Has anyone ever frozen yogurt cups before? I have frozen those go-gurt tubes but then had the kids eat them frozen. So my question is, can you freeze yogurt and then thaw and eat?
Thank you, Carrie and Joanna! It’s the big things of Quaker oats I’m looking for because I use it as base for my homemade granola (and I often buy bulk). I’ll have to see if I can find any coupons this week for just the plain thing of oats that is on sale.
Can you share your recipe for homemade granola? Is it cheaper to make than buy?
Shannon – here is the recipe I use. Frankly, I’ve not compared the price; but I love this granola and love having control over the ingredients. This makes 7 cups of Granola. 4 cups rolled oats (not quick oats). 1.5 cups nuts such as almonds, walnuts & pine nuts. 1/2 c. sunflower seeds or pepitas. 1/4 c. flax seeds (Rainbow has a good price in their bulk section). 1 tsp cinnamon (or more). 3/4 cup honey (I don’t use honey usually, but use Blue Agave and pure Maple Syrup in combination to make about 1/2 cup). 1/4 c. neutral/plain oil such as grapeseed oil (personally, I’ve gotten used to Olive Oil even though it’s not that “neutral”!). 1 tsp vanilla or more; 1/2 tsp. sea salt; 1 cup dried fruit (I use combo of craisins, dried blueberries and dried cherries from Costco – but use whatever you like). Preheat oven to 300. In large bowl combine oats, nuts, seeds & cinnamon. In small saucepan over med. low stir honey, oil, vanilla & salt until honey has dissolved (I don’t do this, but just mix it since I don’t use honey); Pour honey mixture over oat mixture and stir well. Spread it out on baking pan covered with parchment or lightly sprayed. Bake 20 – 25 minutes. Stir every 10 minutes. It will harden more as it cools. When cool, add fruit. Store in tightly covered container for a week at room temp or 4 weeks in fridge. Enjoy : ) I made this for co-worker & neighbor Christmas gifts this year, and it was quite well received!
Alison, I often freeze individual cups of yogurt and serve them as frozen yogurt (like ice cream), but also put it into their school lunches and it thaws just fine during the day.
The Hamburger Helper cannot be doubled – it says “Do Not Double or Triple.” :(
The doubling is something that Rainbow does, not the manufacturer. I don’t know enough about coupon redemption from the store’s perspective, but a cashier told my friend that the store would double regardless of coupon wording. Maybe this was just the cashier’s perspective? But he scanned the coupons, and they doubled with no beeping whatsoever. As long as it’s not “cheating”, it may just be a YMMV thing.
I have been told by many different people that the manufacturer only puts that on the coupons as a disclaimer to let the store know that they will not double the amount that the store receives back even if the store doubles the coupon.
Anyone have any tips on how to get coupons to print? I can print the ones from coupons.com, but not most of the others. I can’t do this oatmeal one, or the one for the free chocolate milk. We get a message that says xpcom.dll is missing. We have downloaded the program 100 times. I don’t know much about computers but my husband does and he says there is nothing else he can do. :(
If you are using Internet Explorer try using Firefox. I could not do that milk thing in FF, but I could do it through IE. Then again there are something that I can do in FF that I can’t do in IE.
Pam – I also just about gave up on printing the oatmeal coupon. But then I looked back at Carrie’s troubleshooting link at the top of the list, and – for the first time ever – I did replace something with the letters “wi”. I didn’t think it would work because it wasn’t a “$” I was replacing, but rather 2 different letters (maybe “wg”). I was surprised and delighted when it said “your coupons are printing”! I did this on internet explorer
Does anyone know if you have to buy five boxes of Quaker to get them for $2 per box at Rainbow? Also, Patti, the Apple Valley Rainbow doubles all of my coupons regardless of if they say DND. One last thing…what is YMMV??? :)
YMMV means literally “your mileage may vary” and means that your own results may be different from someone else’s. :)
Rainbow chooses to double the coupons in exchange for our business. They aren’t cheating, we aren’t cheating; it’s just something they choose to do. Show your thanks by coming in on other days than Wednesdays! :D
Thanks Theresa K! :)
Pam – have you tried Carrie’s link at the top of the page?
“If you have issues printing coupons, then try the troubleshooting suggestions found here.”
When planning my shopping I try to get about $25 groupings. Does anyone know what happens with the B1G1′s? So if I’m buying 2 angel food cake mies at $2.99 each and it’s Buy 1 Get 1.. do I count just $2.99 or 5.98 toward my $25.00 threshhold?
Thanks!
Suz– In my experience both items count toward your $25 total…but i would be prepared with a quick backup if you a different experience.

Alison -
I do freeze yogurt but find that “light” varieties don’t freeze as well- the consistancy isn’t the same when it thaws completely. I try to avoid freezing activia at all- It is really gross when it thaws- very runny.
I am confused about the Chunky soup coupons. You would need to buy 9 to use 3 of the coupons mentioned. Wouldn’t you?
The coupons I received with our paper said that Dannon Activia and Dannon Light & Fit 6-packs, and Danimals are all on sale 2/$3. There are $1 off coupons in the coupons. Did anyone see these on sale at Rainbow? Just planning my trip for tomorrow. Thanks!
Susan – I checked the ad by the coupons last night and saw it to. I haven’t been to Rainbow to check but I feel pretty good having that on my list. It’s usually been valid when I see that “at Rainbow” this week advertisement in the coupon inserts.
All – I’m buying yeast and wheat flour for the first time any clue what good prices are on these? Oh and what’s the difference between a strip and just a regular jar of yeast? I have two red star coupons I found and have no idea!
Susan – I don’t know if you’re a Costco member or not, but for the first time, I noticed they are carrying yeast. My mouth about dropped open at the price because I think it was a 2 lb bag of yeast, and it was $3.something! That is infinintely cheaper than those expensive little strips (even if it was a 1 lb bag, but I’m almost sure it was more than 30 oz). However, this would be way too much yeast unless you’re going to use it quite a bit; but it would be great to split with someone. Even at the store, the jars are going to be cheaper, but it just depends upon how often you’re going to bake. It lasts quite awhile in the fridge. If you aren’t going to use up your whole bag of wheat flour pretty quickly, remember it can go rancid. I double bag mine and keep in in the freezer. Not sure of the best price. I often get that kind of thing from the bulk section unless I see a sale.
Oh, I see. The math is right by using 2 coupons and buy 6.
There was a 50 cent coupon for G2–which is on sale 10/$10. Free after coupon (these are a treat for my kids).
Theresa- I agree, use Rainbow the other days too! Since I’ve started using double coupons, I go to Rainbow even on the non-Wed days to buy odds and ends that are priced about the same anywhere! Even though Cub is a lot closer. I figure Rainbow deserves the busineess.
Suz- I’m 98% sure both count and you’d get the 5.98.
Julie
Does anyone know if the Lysol Toilet bowl cleaner is a good price? I’ve been doing this about 6-8 weeks now, and don’t have a good handle on what rock bottom prices are for household items. Laundry detergent, fabric softeners, TP, paper towels, garbage bags, toilet bowl cleaner, spray cleaners etc.
Although I’m trying to minimize paper towels and garbage bags.
Any input anyone?
julie
Julie, I strive for:
- TB cleaner $1.00 or less (but I have paid $1.50 with a coupon if I have too….. )
- I get most of my spray cleaners at Menards — they seem to have a lot of window cleaner, orange cleaner etc free with their store rebate program.
-Laundry Detergent – I use liquid HE and strive for the $2.00 (or less) mark for a 24-32 load bottle.
- Fabric softener – I hardly ever buy – when I do, I typically buy generic and cut my sheets into multiples so it lasts a long time. I probably pay $1.00 a box or less.
- Garbage bags — I do buy tall kitchen garbage bags. I think Sam’s or Costco was the better deal the last time I bought them.
- I use the plastic cub/walmart/rainbow bags for my small trash cans around the house. However, I’ve been trying really hard to use the cloth bags when I shop so that I bring very few plastic bags into the house.
- Paper Towel – I buy very rarely but strive for .50/roll or less. Often times I buy really cheap paper towel because I use a lot of rags at home – less cost, less waste, and in ample supply with old towels, tshirts, socks etc. If I have to use a rag on something too gross — I have enough that I just toss the rag. BTW — helpful tip for those old socks or the lone sock…I put them all in a rag bag and often time use them to wipe up a spill or the toilet bowl then toss it right in the garbage. (Way cheaper than sanitizing wipes. I keep a spray bottle of bleach water handy if I need to spray before I wipe)
- Paper Napkins – Free (watch for $1.00 off Marcal coupons. Rainbow sells a package for $2.30 and puts on sale for $2 often. Then double your coupon = free)
- TP – $5.00 or less for 24 rolls. (I usually buy Angel soft because you get more sq ft in a package than most brands…)
I wouldn’t say the above are rock bottom for everyone — but some of these things I buy when I really need them and it isn’t often enough so I don’t keep good track of the prices. When I have enough, I often stop even looking at those products.
Julie ~ The toilet bowl cleaner is $.89 after BOGO & coupons @ Wags this week.
Also, regarding garbage bags, I NEVER pay for garbage bags and encourage everyone I know to do the same. With the overabundance of bags I get from groceries and Target/Walgreen’s, I always have more than enough bags for garbage and using paper grocery bags is greener than putting more plastic bags in our landfills.
Shelly,
I don’t know what the price was but a few months ago, I bought Quaker Old Fashioned Oats at Costco and remember thinking it was a great deal compared to the store. They also have a great price on garbage bags, if you do buy them. I got about 200 for the price on one box of Hefty 55 count bags. We use the plastic grocery bags to throw out dirty diapers.
Has anyone been able to find Chex Mix coupons on the web for a flavor other than chocolate?
Is the $25 before or after you use coupons…
Before
If you live in the Forest Lake area, Marketplace Foods has double coupons today only. No minimum $ purchase, no limit on the # of Q’s you can use, Q CAN say DND or DNT (do not double or do not triple). Limitation: Q’s that are $1.00 or less and can’t exceed the value of the item.
I wish I would have seen this note sooner! I was in Flake today & just picked up some stuff at Cub Foods…
My computer is forever telling me I’ve ‘already printed this coupon’ when I haven’t. I’ve gone from firefox to IE and still won’t work. Any advice?
You can not use other coupons on the Quacker. It is either the $3.00, or you can find coupons to meet your products. One or the other, but not both.
My family loves to grill even in the winter and I can’t go with out the Heinz 57 or they complain. The heinz57 website has a promo coupon you can print up to 2 per computer for $1 off, I am sure this would mean a free bottle down the road since it is good on any size. We grilled tonight, and I was out, Rainbow will double this for me tomorrow. Happy Wednesday shopping everyone! Thanks.
Thanks, Sara. We shop at Costco every Saturday morning for our big thing of organic spinach, a 6 pack of Romaine Hearts and a big package of Baby Bella Mushrooms. I’ll remember to get oatmeal there soon! I usually do purchase my oatmeal at Trader Joes because their Steel Cut Organic Oatmeal is so good and much less than most brands – but I use Quaker for my granola base. Your tip is helpful. Thanks to everyone for taking the time share helpful tips!
Hello anybody,
I could really use some help here. I plan on shopping at Pick and Save tomorrow for dbl coupon days. I have a pretty large list of things that I have to pick up, but only a few coupons to use.
Can anybody think of some things that you can use coupons on to get items for free, or close to free at P&S even when the items are not on sale?
Julie
I don’t buy plastic bags-I use the bags I get from stores ( usually I use cloth totebags- but @ some stores I use the plastic so I have a stash of garbage can liners), also dry cleaning bags knotted on the “hanger” end work well- I get them from my sister who has weekly dry cleaning. I have a stack of old wash cloths and raggy hand towels I keep under my kitchen sink. These “floor rags” absorb MUCH more than paper towels. I don’t use paper napkins either- I have assorted finger tip towels and dinner napkins that I have gotten for next to nothing @ dollar stores/clearance tables that we fold and re-use if not soiled.
Carrie – the Purex detergent link says max already printed, help! Thanks!
Barb-thank you so much for sharing the tip on the Heinz 57! It’s our favorite, and those are great coupons! :)
thank you Jeanie, Kim and Jennifer M! Lots of great info.
Question about Lays Kettle chips- the coupon in the SS seems to be a different brand. Am I missing something? I’d like to stock up for a Superbowl party!
Julie
Last week, I had one transaction that no coupon doubled. I didn’t realize it until I was looking at the receipt at home. One of the items was the Yoplait Smoothie. Let us know if the register doubles it for you on your trip.
Any answers to why I had one transaction where no coupons doubled? My other 2 transactions were fine.
Tricia- I guess we’d have to have more information. My best guess is that you didn’t reach the 25$ minimum. Do you know for sure you met it? the register automatically doubles the coupon when the shelf price reaches 25$ (and anyone correct me if I’m wrong on that).
Julie
My total was $31 after coupons…so I did met the $25. I have only been doing double coupons for 4 weeks…so I have learned a lesson or two each time. I learned this past time to watch the register. I was getting my next transaction lined up instead. So I don’t know what happened. I will try it again today and see if the Yoplait smoothie coupon doubles.
The other coupons in that transaction that didn’t double are: Johnsonville brats .35 coupon, Nestle cookie 1.00, Fiber One cereal 1.00 (which doubled in another transaction), Pillsbury breadsticks 1.00, Yoplait Smoothie 1.00.
I think it was just a weird thing because not one doubled, where in my other transactions, everything doubled.
On buy B1G1 items, like the YoPlus and Fiber One Yogurt B1G1 (or 2 for $2.59), can you use a mc for the free item?
I read on another blog, Mom For Him, that you can use 2 coupons (each $1.00) for each B1G1 yogurt. So you would get $4 towards your bill even though the yogurt’s total come to 2 something. I am going to try it today.
Just got back from shopping, and I got $4.00 towards yogurt when I used 2 mc, only spending 2.59 for 2 (FiberOne or Yo-Plus). Sweet!
Also I noticed the Yoplait Delights yogurt packs were on sale for something around the $1.50 mark. I got a $1/1 coupon from coupons.com (I think). I wish I brought it with me. The sale sticker was not the normal looking sticker. Looks like they made it spontaneously. So it might just be at my store.
Tricia, yes! That worked for me the last time Rainbow had this deal…at my location, Shoreview. Good luck!
Yes, Tricia that is correct you should be able to use 2 MQ when it is B1G1F.
for those that are looking there are MQ’s in the 1/3 RP:
$1/2 Aunt Jemina coupon from 1/3 RP
$1/2 True Delights Cafe Squares 12/6 RP
$1/2 Granola Bars coupon from 12/6 RP, 1/3 RP
Just an FYI-The Johnsonville brats are on sale 2/$5, and there are $.55/1 Qs in the SS link next to the Chex deal.
Good news! My friend shopped the Plymouth Rainbow this morning and was able to use both the $3.00 off mfg coupon in the Rainbow flyer AND five mfg coupons which doubled. Pretty cool!
While that’s great for your friend, that technically is doubling up on mfg coupons for the same product which isn’t usually allowed. If your cashier doesn’t allow it, they are technically correct.
I shop at the CR Rainbow and the system there will not even let you try that, the too many coupons error comes up. The lady ahead of me tried doing that not realizing they were both man. coupons
This is only not allowed when the coupons specifically say Do Not Double. If none of them have this wording then I think you can use a $5 off three along with three individual $1. You just need to make sure you read all the wording on the coupons.
Just returned from Rainbow, and was told they have a couple new rules on couponing. My cashier at Roseville told me once you leave the store, you cannot come back and use more coupons (crazy! Another cashier said that’s ridiculous, and of course I can!). The good news is that Roseville Rainbow now accepts MCs with Cub and Target logo on them!
Lisa, I was told something similar today at my Shoreview Rainbow. Today I braved asking customer service if I could do two transactions at once or if they would only let me double per visit. They told me in essence the same thing you were told. They would allow me to do two transactions in one visit and then specifically told me that I can’t go back out to my car and come in again for a third (I didn’t even ask this, he just told me -maybe he has seen me in the past -I was slightly embarrassed =) ) Interesting that you heard the same thing. Wonder if they ARE changing some things?
I find it so interesting that stores would want to turn away your business in this economy….I’d either find another Rainbow to go to for that 3rd transaction or split them up….go once in the morning and do your 2 transactions, then go back that evening and do your 3rd and/or 4th. (Or go to a busy store so when you come back in to do transactions 3 and 4 you can go to another register and they won’t even know you were already there ;-) )
Here’s one of my runs:
4 – Campbell’s Tomato Soup reg .99 sale .49
2 – El Monterey Tornados reg 2.49 sale BOGO
2 – Asian Sensations reg 3.45 sale 2.00
5 – Healthy Choice reg. 3.79 sale 2.20
total reg 34.79 sale 19.45
Coupons used:
soup $1 off 4 (doubled to $2)
Asian Sensation $1 (doubled to $2)
Asian Sensation $1 (doubled to $2)
Tornado $1 (doubled to $2)
Tornado $1 (doubled to $2)
Healthy Choice $5 off 5
so $15.00 off for all coupons = $4.45 OOP (out of pocket)
HTH someone
Looks like your store goes off the REGULAR price. Which one do you frequent?
Has anyone seen the Fiber One Cottage Cheese at Rainbow? I’ve looked the last 2 weeks for it and my Rainbow does not seem to carry it yet.
Melanie,
I’ve also looked, and haven’t found the Fiber One Cottage Cheese. Bummer.
Alison, my friend didn’t do anything wrong! She asked and they said yes. Rainbow can choose to honor whatever they want. I seriously doubt that it was a mistake on Rainbow’s or the cashier’s part. And you are correct that we are all subject to the knowledge, ability and mood of every cashier. And it’s up to each of us to handle questions and difficulties with grace and a smile.
So when trying to meet the $25 minimum do you look at the sale price?
For most stores, it is $25 shelf price. The Brooklyn Park one has changed their registers to not double unless the sale price is $25. Bummer.
Melanie –
When I was chatting with CS at Riverdale last week about something else she saw the Q and said they didn’t carry at that location so I should make sure that I reworked my list b4 shopping (love that Rainbow and everyone that works there). Good chance that others don’t either then.
L
When trying to use the free 1/2 gal. chocolate milk when you buy 2 gal. of white milk coupon at Rainbow today, the cashier said “I can’t take this, it is counterfeit!” How embarrassing to be accused of having a counterfeit coupon. I just printed it off of that milk website Carrie told us about. I put all the milk back! Thank goodness I had enough to meet the $25 w/o the milk.
Anyway, got some good deals besides. Retail of 2 transactions=$65.68 OOP=$19.31 71% savings today. Can’t complain there!
Lots of good deals this week. I’ll be back tonight!
I was also told that I cannot use the free chocolate milk coupon, however, I was told very nicely that my Rainbow can’t take internet printed “free” coupon items. She said she was sorry and offered to return all the milks after my coupons had already doubled (the milk was needed to get them to double). I needed milk so I just returned the 1/2 gallon chocolate milk – hopefully I can use it at Cub or Target sometime.
