Comments

  1. Shelly says:

I went to the West End SLP store at about 12:45 today and was very pleasantly surprised. It was busy, but not crazy-busy. And I don’t think they were out of any of the Kelloggs/Sunshine, etc products nor any of the General Mills cereal for that deal. The cashier was very nice, and it was a good experience – just time consuming to figure out which products to get to match my coupons.

Just a note about that Rainbow: there are some Cover Girl products on 50% clearance. I was so disappointed that I didn’t have any of my Cover Girl coupons with me!

It seems like there should be a decision made that Target issued Manufacturer’s coupons should only be used at Target so we don’t harass the cashiers and make coupon-users look bad. What do people think? It would seem like Target would provide those so that people would shop at Target. Maybe I’m missing something and would be interested in knowing the thoughts of others.

  2. Shelly says:

Angela, you always have to spend $25 to have coupons doubled; and five is their limit (except for next week – yeah!)

  3. Valerie says:

Angela P – Carrie has a link at the top of this post that outlines Rainbow’s doubling policy. They do require $25 and only double 5 coupons (per transaction). Many of us do multiple transactions in a day. (shop, pay, take it to the car, shop again.)Rainbow states that their policy is $25 after sale price, but their registers do it on the shelf price most of the time.

it sounds like you might be new.. look around Carrie’s posts and see if that helps you.

  4. Vanessa says:

Just got back from the store and the clerk let me know that the sale was going to being going on for the rest of the week. I wasn’t sure if she just meant on the pop or everything.????

  5. Janet says:

I just got back from the WStPaul store and they were out of the cereal, cheese, butter and cream cheese. They will not issue rainchecks for the cereal, but will for the other products! They did, however, take the Target $5 coupon on the miscellaneous cereals scavenged from the aisles of the store! It was NUTS in there, but the cashiers and customer service staff still had smiles on their faces!

  6. Cath says:

Shelly- Manufacturer coupons are just that- the store sends all manufacturer coupons to clearinghouses and gets paid for them by the manufacturer. So Target is not behind them, the manufacturer is…
    HTH!

  7. Peter says:

The Target manufacturer coupons do seem to be missing security features common to other internet coupons. They could easily be copied, and reading some comments it is clear that some people are doing so. I wonder if this is part of the reason they are not being accepted.

  8. Rachel says:

Yes to All next Wed. Rainbow is doubling up to 10 coupons. I just heard about it when I was at work. ( I work for Rainbow) . We normally only double the first 5.

  9. Penny says:

After reading all the posts…I decide to skip Rainbow shopping today. It’s almost 7 pm and rather than drive to the Shoreview Rainbow too see empty shelves…I am going pull out the Lego’s and build/play with my 4 1/2 year old son!

    Happy Holidays to All!

  10. Angela P says:

Valerie- thanks for the info. The Lakeville Rainbow does it on the sale price. Today the cashier (who was one of the manager’s) refused to accept $1 off coupons I had for the cereal and crackers. She said that would make them free to me. So instead she just took off 50 cents making them 50 cents. Was that correct?

  11. SarahBB says:

Coupla things: My Target manufacturer coupon did work at Eagan Rainbow– but maybe because the poor, tired cashier was trying to get me thru fast due to the post-apocolyptic energy caused by the Keebler deal on double coupon nite! Total craziness, empty shelves, lines stretching all the way around the store– like a grocery store in FLA day before a hurricane!

  12. Priscilla says:

Today was my first time going to Rainbow for doubles & it was a success! OOP was $7.42, savings was $38.25.
I was able to get a manager to substitue the Rice Krispie cereal as they were out of the correct size (of many other varieties as well).
I purchesed the 4 12pks. of Mountain Dew, free marshmellows (if you buy 2 rice krispies), some chicken patties, 8 of the qualifying Kellogg items & 2 packages of the Roundy block cheese.
I’m pretty happy with my trip!

  13. Laurie says:

I visited the FL Rainbow this morning and had a very bad experience. Then at lunch I went to the NE MPLS (quary) Rainbow and had just the opposite experience. It was crazy but they had all the sale items, every lane was open, and lots of people stocking the shelves. The cashier was very helpful and I ended up sending $28 and save $109…(4 transactions) I was so giddy when I got back to work that my coworkers thought I was CRAZY! :)

I ended up going back to the FL Rainbow because my pop did not ring up with the sale that I bought in the morning. The manager told me that I needed to have an additional $25 purchase AFTER all coupons. I ended up returning the pop. I think I am going to STOP going to the FL Rainbow and just go to the NE Minneapolis (Quary) Rainbow. I have not heard of anyone having a good experience at the FL Rainbow…

  14. Jenn says:

I went back to Rainbow at 4:30 PM (good thing I only live a couple of blocks away!)… I had already done my 8 deal thing that morning and on Sunday so I passed on this trip but I went back because I forgot a couple of coupons at home for other staples. The cereals & poptarts were about the only thing that was out – they still had a buncha crackers, cookies (in fact someone was restocking the cookies when I was there!), NutriGrain bars, Special K bars… There were still plenty of good things to get! Bagel Bites was still alive and so was cream cheese although the regular cheese was gone.

  15. Sarah says:

Angela P – I don’t think that is correct for them to adjust it so you still pay something for the item. I don’t know what Rainbow’s official policy is, but at Target they will adjust the value of the coupon to make it match the sale price. Even though you don’t pay anything with a $1 coupon for the $.99 items, Rainbow will get paid by the manufacturer for the full coupon value. In fact, that kinda makes it dishonest on Rainbow’s part because they are only giving you $.50 but they will get $1 from the mfr!

  16. Jenny says:

I have to say that I was extremely disappointed with my shop to Rainbow…it was a joke! They were out of everything, the lines were going all around the store, everyone was in a horrible mood….they weren’t issuing rainchecks for anything. VERY disappointed!

  17. Mitzie says:

Cottage Grove Rainbow out of all cereal and crackers – not a crumb left – but they ARE giving rainchecks.

  18. Mary says:

Start checking several Pick’nSave ads in your area. I buy two different newspapers and receive one free one each week so I get several ads from Pick’nSave.

I am close to the metro Milwaukee area and close to Racine WI.
all three areas had a different flyer this week.
Local Pick’nSave had the Kelloggs items at $1.25 as did Milwuakee metro. 4 Racine/Kenosha stores had them at .99. The local talk of town is how our Pick’nSave is so expensive…now I have to believe it is true as I saw it in print!

  19. Martha says:

I was at the new St Louis Park store this morning and they had tons of cereal and crackers. Then went to the Eden Prairie store tonight after church, and it was a mess.

Because the Kellogs cereals were gone, I got the Post 2/$4. When I checked out, I used a $1/2 coupon, and a $1 off my next shopping trip coupon printed out! So with the double coupon, and the $1 next time coupon, they were .50 each!

  20. Theresa K. says:

Laurie – as consumers, all we can really do is express ourselves with our dollars and our voices. I think you made a wise decision. I was hesitant to start shopping at Rainbow because the nearest one to me is older and the cashiers are often crabby. Then a new Rainbow opened just a little further away and it is wonderful! I seriously wonder if a higher up mangement person would like to hear some of these strange stories of shopping at Rainbow. Thanks again to Carrie for running a coupon site that preaches ethical savings tips (not that any other sites don’t, but Carrie’s intention in ethical behavior shines through in all she does.)

  21. Theresa K. says:

Martha, I also love the SLP store. I have hesitated talking about it because it’s such a great secret! :) I have wondered if one reason it does so well is that it seems to attract younger people, especially singles and the recently married. I also see people 40+ at the store, so I feel quite at home. The managers and cashiers and baggers are outstanding and friendly. I shop there for more than just the values, cuz I would NEVER want to experience what some of you do at a few rogue Rainbow stores!

  22. Lili says:

First, I want to say I really enjoy this site. Thanks Carrie for starting it.
Next, I was at the Rainbow in St Paul (Lex Ave) just about an hour ago and just as the cashier had finished ringing up my items, the store manager, who was going from one cashier to the next, came over to talk to my cashier and told him that Rainbow’s policy was now to accept manufacturer coupons with Target logos! Too bad I didn’t hear this before I did my shopping.

  23. Michele says:

My Rainbow was out of everything! On the positive side though, they let me use my Kelloggs coupons that were for specific cereals on whatever they had left on their shelves. I got Coco Krispies and Raisin bran using my doubled $1/2 coupons making them free after coupons. Plus, Coco Krispies has a coupon on the box for free marshmallows when you buy 2, so I got 3 free bags of marshmallows to boot! I was able to get a raincheck on pop-tarts, cheese, and cream cheese. The Keebler coupon ($1/2) couldn’t have come at a better time as I was able to get 8 free boxes of crackers as well. It was a mad house, but I saved 73% today so it was well worth it.

  24. Michele says:

Angela P – while I am sure the manager at the Lakeville store is correct, my husband and I did 5 transactions and we were able to double our 1st five $1 Keebler and Kelloggs coupons on each transaction, though they were $1/2 coupons, not $1/1 coupons.

  25. Alison says:

I had a stellar Rainbow day today – I went to the EP Rainbow this morning and got some Kelloggs/Keebler items before they started running out. It was busy at 8:30 AM but I have always still had a good experience there. Then I went to the SLP store in the evening. It’s a bit further than the EP one from my house, but SO worth it. They were well stocked in ALL the Keebler/Kelloggs items and I have always had excellent service there. I totally agree with Theresa in that I think it is a great little secret since it’s a new store.
    $234.58 worth of groceries for $65.64 today – I think it’s a 72% savings!

  26. cashbaq kid says:

Any chance they’ll extend the 8 @ 99 cents deal for the rest of the week and just keep doing it word of mouth style?

  27. Jessica says:

Sounds like the only store in stock today was SLP…I was at three different stores today at all times of the day: Eagan, Apple Valley and Shoreview. All were insane and out of all of the cereals expect Honey Smacks…really? No thanks =) But for some reason I kept going back and ended up with 5 transactions today (my poor 2 1/2 year old!) It was somewhat exhausting and disappointing, yet a lot of fun stocking the pantry when I got home =) After all of that today I vowed to skip next week, but I’m sure I won’t be able to resist the doubling of 10 coupons! That will make things so much faster! I guess I will probably go and aim for just one transaction =) This coupon business is addicting!!!

  28. Angela P says:

Michele- I’d have to agree with Sarah. I don’t think it was accurate for the manager to only take 50 cents off. The coupons were $1off 2 items.

  29. Melissa E says:

    hey Carrie –
Would you mind taking a look into the mfg/Target coupons and whether or not they can be used at rainbow as they are technically mfg coupons… I’m actually also curious about the cub coupons – some print as mfg, but say redeemable at cub…can they only be redeemed there? i would think that a company would want your business, even if they had to take a comp coupon…

Thanks so much for your help!

    • Carrie Rocha says:

Melissa E – Yes, I have emails into a contact of mine at SuperValu (but no word back yet, which is odd?) about the Target coupons. In general, my thinking has beent hat if it says “redeemable at XXX store” then you have to use it at the specified store, even if it is a manufacturer’s coupon. The competitor may not get reimbursed from the manufacturer, which means they absorb the loss and ultimately pass those higher costs on to us. But, the difference with the Target coupons is that they do NOT say “redeemable at Target”. In fact, the wording on the coupon gives no mention of Target, except their logo is printed on it. I have a management-level contact at Rainbow that reads Pocket Your Dollars and is responsible for his grocery business. I’ll ask him and be in touch.

  30. erica f edwards says:

Av was out of everything that is my favorite store it was soo busy and yet very not attractive..so I started my adventure to eagan but got turned around and ended up at LV and yes they were out of the cereal but had plenty of crackers..I did get quite a few things with some rainchecks but it was worth it. I had a nice cashier and the store was very clean..MY dannon cpn would not work but the nicest lady came and overrode it..I think LV will be my fav store from now on:)

  31. Ann V says:

SLP Rainbow rocks! I went at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon and the only thing they were out of was Rice Krispies. I found everything else I needed and my kids’ schools are getting 6-8 boxes of crackers tomorrow for snack time. The teachers will be thrilled and with my double coupons, they were all free. Can’t get much better than that!

  32. Kirsten says:

I almost drove to SLP, and now kind of wish I would have! Stock was fair at East Lake St/Mpls tonight. The shelves were relatively bare except in the cracker section (someone shopping around the same time as I was got the last two boxes of flip sides…I was bummed!) But, there was a large pallet of cereal “hiding” in the meat department and I was able to get the Special K and Mini Wheats I was hoping for there.

At East Lake I had no problems with a $1/1 Blueberry Special K not only taking, but doubling as well!!! Had I known that ahead of time that it would double, I would have bought more of that.

And I finally got the free frozen veggies that I have been dreaming of! (Four bags free!)

  33. Cecia says:

A couple people have asked if Rainbow will do rain checks for the cereal deal, my experience today was that I was able to get a rain check for the Kellogg deal and the cheese. I spoke with customer service to get my raincheck. Like I said in my previous post though, I was asked specifically what cereal I would be purchasing (Mini wheats etc) and the cashier noted them on my raincheck. I made sure I had coupons to match up for what I wanted. Next Wednesday may just be a great day to use that raincheck too! I’m not sure however how it’s going to effect my $25 threshold since the price will have to be manually entered.

  34. Michele says:

Angela – sorry if I confused you but what I meant to say was that we did not have our coupons reduced at the Lakeville store, so even if the manager was correct at least 5 other tellers were not following the same policy. I would not have wanted to have my coupons reduced either.

  35. Katie says:

Does anyone know if gift card purchases count towards your rewards. I am a little over $100 shy of reaching the $1,050 mark for the promotion and it ends on Saturday. (Just a note, I only spent $353 oop).

  36. Tanya says:

Katie – I was told yesterday by a cashier that the Rainbow gift cards do not count towards your total, but the “partner” gift cards do. So, if you needed to buy a Best Buy gift card or something anyways, you could get them at Rainbow and have it count towards your free food. HTH

  37. Katie says:

Thanks Tanya. In their add starting today, they have buy 2 or more of the $50 gift cards shown and receive $10 off your next shopping trip. The cards include Barnes and Nobles, Kohls, AMC, BP Gas, iTunes and Applebee’s. If it works, I will not only get my $10 rewards but another $10 on top of that. Great deal.

  38. christie fleischhacker says:

Carrie I am curious as to how your trip was last night and what kind of deals you were able to get. I did stop back at the MG store last night on my way home and the shelves were almost bare! They had pallets of cereal which I was able to get but no crackers which is what I was going for.

I also had my coupons reduced to $.50 instead of $1 at the Lakeville store. It doesn’t seem right to me, but I am not sure what a person can do about it. I was there earlier in the day and they took the $1 coupons. They were $1 off 2 coupons, not off of 1, but they also said it was because it would make them free.

I went back to our St. Louis Park Rainbow today to redeem my free milk coupon from yesterday and also take advantage of a couple of other deals from their “3 day sale” (today through Saturday). I decided to just see if they had extended that Keebler/Kelloggs/Sunshine 99 cent sale. They still had plenty of those products, and although the 99 cent deal is over, they had them today for $2.50 each and if you bought 8 items for $20, you instantly got $10 back. Since I had a few $1 off coupons with me, i was able to get 8 of those cracker/cereal/bar products for about $5. Still a great deal and a great way to share with the foodshelf, too. Not sure if all the Rainbows are doing that today?

Disappointed with Rainbow by Northtown, Blaine. Empty selves at 4:00 in the afternoon. Hopifully Rainbow sees this. May not go to that store again.

  42. Heidi says:

Just went to Rainbow with my raincheck for buy 8 kellogs products for .99. Today they have a deal if you buy 8 kellogs cerals you get $10 off your order. The $10 off is automatic so I was able to get both deals plus I had coupons for the ceral totalling $3.50. So if you have a raincheck now is the time to go use it! I was so suprised Rainbow was using both specials at once!

  43. Amy says:

On two occasions I accidentally used “store-specific manufacturer’s coupons” at a different store. At Rainbow the checker would not honor the coupon but at Cub the checker asked a manager who checked with a higher up and the coupon was accepted. In both cases the coupon had a Target logo on it. I continue to try use the store specific coupons only at the specified store.

  44. Leigh says:

    Carrie-
A manager at my Pick ‘n Save in Marshfield, WI told me that they got an e-mail from corporate saying they would accept the Target coupons because they are manufacturer coupons. The coupons don’t scan though, so they need an override.

    Hey everyone,
I just thought I’d share some knowledge on a few things

The buy 2 50$ gift cards, get 10$ back deal does count towards your rewards on your ROundys card for the deal on spending 525$ between October and today, get a10$ Roundy’s card.

Today I bought 4 50$ BP gas gift cards- I got 10$ back on each of 2 purchases of 2, then that 200$ total put me over the 525$ mark on the ROundy’s grocery spending deal. So thn I got another 10$ (in the form of a Rainbow Gift card). So I spent 200$ for gas cards, and got 30$ back. PLUS they gave me fuel rewards for the 200$ spent, so I got 40 cents off a gallon for buying the gift cards too!

And the best part, the clerk was super helpful with this. She actually pointed me towards the deal, which was surprising. Thanks Rainbow!

Heads up, the “earn 10$ for spending 525$ cumulatively” deal ends today.

    Julie
