Grocery

Buy 6 select General Mills Cereals at full price, get $10 off your grocery order and coupon for free milk

1)      This milk coupon usually rings as $3.25 off your next order that contains milk versus just taking off the value of the milk

2)      Work backwards when you put your deal idea together. Focus on your target price for cereal, which is for me no more than $1 per box. 6 boxes at $1 each is $6. Considering the $10 discount, that means I want my total after coupons to be no more than $16 for 6 boxes or $2.66 each.

3)      I usually do more than one transaction in the evening when this promotion is running. I buy my cereal first, then use the milk coupon on my next order. It keeps me from forgetting to redeem the coupon.

Carrie- I do believe you. I just don’t understand what I’m not doing right. Hopefulyy seeing the recipts will help me out. Thanks!!

  2. Jules

Angela, I’m with you, I saved 71% tonight and was ECSTATIC and then I saw Carrie’s post! Way to go Carrie, can’t wait to see how you did it.

For me, I think you save more if you need more. It’s just my boyfriend and I, no kids or pets, and I think we don’t need to buy as much stuff as some do, and so I don’t think we have as much flexibility in what deals I can get. Make sense? I don’t need as many free bandaids, or free batteries, etc etc. And we don’t go through stuff quickly to necessitate big purchases.

Anyway, that’s my thoughts. I love what I’ve been able to do so far, and am excited about everyone’s input on this site. Keep it up!

I spent 47.46 for $198.17 worth of products — plus I have 4 milk coupons and $5.00 off for buying the PG Old Spice Deodorant. The 11/29 PG insert had $1/2 Old Spice Deod plus had get a free Old Spice Cologne when you buy 3 deod. That same insert also had a cpn for get a free OS body spray when you buy 3 deod. I had 2 inserts, some extra $1/2….so I got 8 deod (the only kind my husband uses, and he was almost out) and was able to use 4 $1/2 and 2 Free Cologne AND 2 Free Body Spray. So net — I got 8 deod, 2 body spray and 2 cologne for $15.29 — and got a $5.00 coupon for another order. So really 10.29 out of pocket. (orig price would have been $52.75. ) The cologne alone was over $8.00 a bottle and I got 2 of those free! The free products will be great stocking stuffers for my teenage boys.

My Amazing Rainbow Double Coupon Day!

I started out by purchasing a $25 gift certificate to meet my double coupon base requirement. To that purchase I added my first five double-coupon items:
1 bag of Rhodes Whole Wheat frozen rolls ($1 coupon)
    3 YoPlus 4pks ($1 coupon for each)
    1 4pk of YoPlait Delights ($1 coupon).

Total for this purchase, including the $25 gift card: $24.87.

After putting the first load in the van, I headed back for my second round:
6 boxes of General Mills cereals using Carrie’s guideline of 2.66 per box after the coupons.
3 packages of Roundy’s double split chicken breasts for about $2.00 a package
    1 Mentos gum (.55 coupon).

On this purchase, I received the $10.00 General Mills reward and the $5.00 Yoplait reward (from my first purchase). The total for this purchase after rewards was $12.86. I used my recent $10 gift card reward for spending over $500 in groceries (pre coupon prices, of course!). I then owed $2.86 out of the $25 gift card.

For my third and final trip, I purchased:
1 4pk of Orville Redenbacher Smart Pop microwave popcorn (.40 coupon and on sale)
2 boxes of Aunt Jemima original pancake mix (not on sale, but son’s favorite +$1/2 coupon)
1 large Log Cabin syrup (no coupon, not on sale, a staple item for us)
2 jars of Muir Glen organic pasta sauce ($1 coupon for each)
1 pork roast (acceptable price on sale)
    1.6 lbs banana
1 5lb box of Clementine oranges ($1 coupon)
2 gallons of milk ($3.25 coupon from cereal purchase)

Total for this purchase I paid 19.69 from the $25.00 Gift Card. I still have $2.45 on it!

Total price for all these items is my original $24.87 minus the $2.45 I have left on the card. Even if you add back in the $10 reward gift certificate, $34.87 minus $2.45 is still a great deal. So, I paid either 22.42 or 32.42. I’m sticking with the lower figure because I consider that $10 totally free money.

Oops! Forgot my Cascade 20pk dishwasher detergent. No coupon, but sale price. Was in the 2nd trip with the cereals

  6. Theresa K.

Angela,…you’re doing it “right”. You’re trying, learning, discussing, tweaking. We all started that way. I started a year ago with just Walgreens and Target. I was ready to go deeper when a brand new Roundy’s opened by my house. I don’t always have such huge nights like last night and sometimes I just skip double coupon Wednesdays. I am buying for 4 (one at college), but I am very particular about what I buy. I do not purchase frozen prepared meals (except for pizza), I don’t buy much junk food and I refuse to buy something just for the price unless I truly want to try it.

Question for all – How do you determine how much money you save at Roundys? Should I add up the SAVINGS figure after my total? I don’t consider that accurate since I would never pay their inflated prices. Last night I had $85 of “SAVINGS”, but $30 was in coupons doubled. So are you all counting the “SAVINGS” or just your coupons? If I used my “SAVINGS” figure plus what I actually paid, then I bought $142 of groceries for $22.42. That gives me 85%. Is that how you all do it? (I’m not a best at math!)

  7. Shelly

Tami, do you remember where you got the Blue Bunny $1 off coupons? Even if it’s not “double day” anymore, that would make that ice cream a great deal the rest of the week! Thanks!

  8. Amy

I’m new to the site (and to coupon cutting), and I had a question for you folks. I went to Rainbow yesterday to try to take advantage of some of your suggestions, and tried to use two manufacturer-issued coupons with the Target logo on them. I was at the Rainbow on Lake Street in Minneapolis (near Minnehaha Ave.), and the cashier refused to take the coupons because they had the Target logo on them. The manager came over and also refused to take them, and was actually really rude about it. She spoke down to me in such a snide manner that I don’t think I’ll ever go back to that Rainbow. But I want to know, was she right? I thought from this blog that manufacturers coupons were good anywhere, even if they have a Target logo on them.

  9. Tami W

Shelly-I googled Blue Bunny ice cream coupons, and it led me to a sight in which I could sign up for their “I scream” club. It let me print all five of them! :) Good luck!

  10. Elise B

I was at Rainbow yesterday and received my $5 coupons for the Yoplait and Kelloggs cereal. I also received $5.00 for buying Lean Cuisine! I have no idea how many you have to buy to get this but I bought 10 of them. I do not like these coupons, they are on the bottom of your receipt, very hard to miss and you have to use all of them at once.

  11. Sun

    Carrie,

Thanks to all your deals you put together, I haven’t paid a red cent for my cereal in months, I think I might be going on a year now. I have to tell you the cereal deal I got yesterday. I live in Madison, so my ad is one week behind yours. The promo was “buy 8 kellogg’s cereal, and receive $5 off”. At first blush, this does not sound like much of a deal. Well, it turns out that most kellogg’s cereal was on sale for 1.99 and it also coincided with their other promo ” buy $20 worth of Kellogg’s cereal between 9/1 through 12/2, and receive $5 off your next order. And I was already $10 into that promo.

I happened to have (8) $1 Kelloggs’s cereal coupons with me. So, here is the deal that I got:
Bought 8 boxes at 1.99 for roughly 16.00. Since the coupons doubled on the first five, the coupons took off (5) *2 + (3) *1 = 13.00. Then I got $5 off my order for purchasing 8 boxes, then I got another $5 off on my next order for the other promo. So, I ended up making $7 on this deal.
    ( 16 -13 -5 -5 = -7). I think this is the best cereal deal I have ever gotten!

  12. Jules

    Amy,

I’m pretty new at this too (about a month) so can relate to some of your questions. As a newbie I”m trying different things. I have had nothing but good experiences at Rainbow (Blaine) so hope your experience doesn’t scare you away. Maybe you can call headquarders and let then know how you were treated? But don’t give up!

I don’t know the answer to the manufactured coupon with a target logo. I used one the other day at Rainbow without difficulty, the register didn’t beep. Does anyone else see a policy on that somewhere? I would like to know the answer.

    Jules

  13. Angela P

Carrie- I think I am not saving as much because I don’t have any of the $5, etc. coupons that you do. How do you get those?

  14. Barb

My story is about the same as many of yours. My Rainbow shopping bill without coupons would have been $109.50 with the general sale prices listed in the Rainbow ad. But utilizing double coupons and General Mills in store rebates, my total cost for 4 transactions was $42.78 a 61% savings. I try to keep things simple and organized by only spending about 1 hour prep and heading out to the store. The thing I try to remember is to buy a good balance of food to last the whole week to feed my famliy of 5. Thanks for all the buying tips posted by Carrie and others here on PYD.

  15. Shelly

Thank you, Tami! I found it and printed off two of the Blue Bunny coupons and then has a thank you for joining the “I scream” club, I got another one. My son was excited to find Peanut Butter Panic and Monster Cookie cream in our freezer – and the price was great!

On another note, Carrie, do you or any of your readers know of the best price on salt for the water softener? I usually get it when Cub has their coupons for salt. And years ago, I remember that Culligan had a once a month “cash and carry” sort of sale on 80 lbs bags. Costco does not have a good price (or else maybe it’s just a more premium one than we would buy). Thanks!

  16. Valerie

    Shelly,

My husband and I have priced salt regularly at 4.99/bag. We look for prices under that as being a sale. Aldis carries salt regularly for $3.99/bag, but they don’t accept coupons. hth. I’ve used the morton coupons when PNS ran a sale a few months ago.

  17. Shelly

Thanks, Valerie! The salt we use is on sale at Cub starting today for $3.50 a bag (limit 4), so guess that’s pretty good. Cub used to regularly have that type on a coupon for 5 bags for $10. My husband and I sometimes lament that we’re stuck in a time warp with expecting prices to be the same as they were several years ago : )
