Michelle, a Pocket Your Dollars reader, let me know about this cool website BookSaleFinder.com. It lists upcoming used book sales by state.
The site has lots of advertising on it, but if you can look past that, then it is very easy-to-use. You can even sign up to be emailed when new sales in your area are added.
I love it because, truth be told, I think used books make great gifts. Shhhhh…don’t tell my friends and family (friends and family, pretend you never read this), but I have given all sorts of used books – birthday presents for kids and adults, recipe books and marriage books for bridal shower gifts, parenting books for baby shower gifts, and novelty-type books for prizes at showers I host.
Your turn: Besides books, what other types of gently used items have you given (or would you consider giving) as gifts?

Also bestbookbuys.com is a good place to compare prices on new and used books through book stores
Also, paperbackswap.com is a super way to circulate used books. I’ve been a member for several years and can’t say enough good things about it.
Many people have collections (I’m particularly fond of World’s Fair books) and they love receiving books that add to their collection. If your friend or family member has a hobby, she/he would likely appreciate related books. (The cook in your family would love receiving a stack of old cookbooks tied with a big ribbon.)
Another trend in collecting is LPs. The covers are works of art and frames are even now available to display them. LPs are often available at used book sales.
And bring your children to the sale – they’re thrilled to pick out all the books they want without breaking the piggy bank!
I also use booksalemanager.com. For me its easier to use to be able to search by zip code. Some times you are on the road and you may not know surrounding city names. The zip code search allows me to look for sales in an area I am not familiar with .
