Amazon prime

Mercedes at Common Sense with Money let me know that Amazon is offering a free three-month trial of Amazon Prime when you buy an eligible textbook. Amazon Prime gets you free 2-day shipping on select products with no minimum purchase (normally you need to spend $25 to get free shipping). Offer valid through February 5, 2010.

There are a handful of qualifying textbooks selling for $1 each, so you’ll ultimately end up paying $1 for this service.

Here’s exactly what you need to do:

1. Buy qualifying book. Add on of the following qualifying textbooks to your Amazon shopping cart:

Romeo and Juliet $1

William’s Shakespeare Complete Sonnets $2

Jane Eyre $3.50

Tess of the D’Urbervilles $3.50

Great Expectations $3.50

Oliver Twist $3.50

2. Click on free two-day shipping button on the right side of the page

3. Click Proceed to checkout button

4. Accept Trial Offer. The next window will show up giving you the details of the Amazon Prime Trial offer. Accept it.

5. Purchase. Finish the purchase of the book.

Word of caution: You are signing up for a free trial that is set to automatically renew at full price in 3 months, which would cost you $79.  But, if you can change your account settings you can avoid this renewal and Amazon Prime will simply lapse after the three months. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to Your Account on Amazon
  • Click Manage Prime Membership link
  • Click Do not Upgrade button, then click Turn off auto-upgrade button

Your turn: Did you find any other textbooks at a great price?

Technically, you don't actually have to buy anything. If you put a textbook in your cart it will make the offer before the actual purchase is made. I buy a ton through Amazon and initially it didn't offer it to me, I had to try several different textbooks. Finally it made the offer when I had a Financial Accounting book in my cart. I didn't actually purchase the book, but I still have the Prime 3-mo trial. It's a great deal!

Another great way to get a great deal on Prime is to have 4 of you go together and pay $20 each because each Prime account allows you to have 4 amazon accounts on it…

so my sister and I and 2 of her friends share her membership which she has so graciously offered to us fro the past two years. This next year we are all chipping in with her.

I am addicted to the 2 day shipping now:(… and $20 is a great price to not have to get each order up to $25 to get the free shipping plus you get the item in two days!

Cool! Thanks for the info, Carrie (and Mercedes). :-) Amazon's my favorite place to get books. I'll have to check into trying the trial Prime membership!
