Cub Foods Shopping List 11/15 – 11/21/09

 cub foods

The Cub list is long, but the deals aren’t the greatest.  In fact, I included a higher than average number of mediocre deals only because I know so many of us have groceries we need to buy for the holiday meal regardless of whether the products are on sale.  So I left lots of those kinds of items in, but wanted to separate the ones that I think are a very good deal.

I marked the best deals with a ** before the product name (i.e. **Jimmy Dean Sausage $3.99) to make them easy to spot.

If you are new to Pocket Your Dollars, then learn to read this shopping list. If you are having issues, troubleshoot problems printing coupons here.

Your turn: What other items do you think should be marked as a “best deal” this week?

Aldi (Northtown) everyday prices if you are not brand loyal:

100% Whole Wheat Bread (1st ingredient is whole wheat flour) – $1.69
    Mayonnaise – 1.89/32 oz
    “Miracle Whip” – 1.69/32 oz

  3. Erica

My Cub (Northtown/Blaine) had a sign that said their turkeys would be $0.37/lb until Thanksgiving if anyone is still looking for a bird.

  4. Kirsten

There was also a Rainbow full-page ad in section A of the Sunday Star Tribune with a coupon for a turkey at $0.37/lb.

  5. Jennifer M.

The Monticello Cub also had the .37/lb sale sign up that says the price is good through Thanksgiving . . . which was a relief that I don’t have to try and make room in my freezer to get that price!

  6. Kellyn

My cub also had some great prices on Turkey that weren’t in the ad, so I got three…plus I had a coupon for the Butterball, so it was about $.55 a pound.

I like some of the prices at cub, but really don’t like that they don’t break down their receipt like Rainbow does…it makes it so much easier. And they don’t include the sale discounts in your savings total.

  7. Lindsey M

Take Note: The Jennie-O Turkey for 1.39/lb is a FRESH turkey, not frozen. The FROZEN turkeys are .37/lb.

  8. mike

FYI: i haven’t tried it yet this week, but i may tonight…..when you buy 12-packs of pepsi, manufacturer coupons for $1 off/case usually scan. so those 12-packs of pepsi may cost you $1.48 each. this is a definite stock up week, especially w/ 12-packs, as case sales mean you can’t get wild cherry diet pepsi.

  9. Lindsey M

MIKE – Where do you get the $1 off/case coupon?

  10. Annette

anyone know how long cream cheese will keep? Can you freeze it?

  11. Melissa E

okay wait…what’s the difference between a FROZEN turkey and a FRESH turkey?? what are the big 10-15lb ones that are wrapped up in netting? (sorry – hosting thanksgiving for the first time and trying to save money doing it!)

  12. Haley

So, I cannot get the Gerber coupon from the link provided… anyoune have any luck? The page is blank under “coupons” when I pull it up.

Also, Cream Cheese will last unopened in the fridge for months. Check the “use by date”. I have frozen it before and it seemed just fine.

Sounds like I am hitting up on the butter for holiday baking this week!

  13. Abby Dabby

Annette – I bought the cream cheese today and it says it doesn’t expire until March of 2010.

  14. Lindsey M

A fresh turkey hasn’t been frozen. I would think the only big difference is convenience. If you buy a frozen turkey you need to put it in your fridge a few days in advance in order for it to be thawed for cooking.

  15. Jennifer

Fresh turkey also tend to run on the smaller size. You aren’t likely to find a 20 lb fresh turkey.

  16. Jeanna

I see you have a note about a coupon from 8/2. I thought Cub only accepted expired coupons three months after they expire…has this changed?

  17. Lindsey M

The coupon is from the 8/2 Smartsource. It’s in the ad that came in the paper that day, not when it expires. I don’t know when it expires because I don’t have the Smartsource from that day.

  18. Lori

I didn’t get the link to work for the Imagine Organic Broth printable coupon, and I didn’t find it doing a quick Google search. Any one had luck?

  19. Haley

Anyone know where the Pepsi $1/case coupon can be found?

  20. Julie

Jeanna–I just called CUB the other day, and they honor coupons 3 months past the expiration date.

And yes, I’m looking fo coupons for sodas by the 12 pack or case too if anyone has some tips!

  21. Leah

I have some expired Jennie-o turkey store coupons I used on the turkey last week. They say Jennie-O turkey store right on the turkey.

  22. Jennifer M.

The Pepsi is actually limit 2 PER COUPON, but you can use 2 of the coupons per family according to the coupons. This is one of the lowest prices I have seen on pop for a long time. I am hoping they are not out by the time I make it to Cub!

  23. Mike

picked up odds and ends, including $3 cases of pepsi, at cub tonight. i did quite well for the random stuff i bought.

i used the self-checkout (which i typically hate) to buy my stuff because then i’m less likely to get hassled about using $1 off case coupons when i’m buying 12-packs of diet pepsi.

i was using my $1 off 5 cans of del monte and it prompted me to insert the coupon, i initially did, but it was a long coupon, so it didn’t go all the way in, but it registered the coupon. sometimes it doesn’t seem to prompt for acoupon, i have noticed. (i think it’s mostly store coupons that the machine doesn’t care about collecting.)

as it turns out, i pulled the coupon back out of the slot and kept it. i got credit for the dollar, but cub doesn’t have the coupon.

i could justify doing that with coupons by the fact that those “speed zone” self checkout lanes are usually a pain in the rear, and not any faster for me. all it does is help grocery stores save money on labor, and if i’m gonig to scan my own stuff, i deserve a little bonus. but obviously if i fake inserting all my manufacturer coupons, cub is going to lose several dollars per trip, and ultimately that means higher prices for all of us.

so no, i don’t plan to do that every time i shop, but i bet i’m not the first one to figure out how you can cheat the self checkout, and i’m sure there are people who take advantage of it every time they shop, which kind of defeats cub’s purpose of having them.

  24. Mike

and as for jennifer’s comment on pepsi pricing, i second the motion, i’ve been hard pressed to find anything close to that price in recent months, save for an unadvertised $5/case price on pepsi at cub back in october. with my coupons and the $5 rebate they were offering, i did rather well.

i haven’t monitored this every december for the past 5 years, but a few years ago, for a couple of years running, there were great pepsi prices at target prior to Xmas, so watch for that in december. (gift card w/ purchase deals.)

i remember back in the good ‘ol days of target printables you could buy four 12-packs for $11, get a $5 gift card with purchase, and use four $1/off 12-pack printable coupons, meaning you’d get cases for $1. i hit target up four or five times that week. and i’d buy 8 oz. bags of shredded cheese for 24 cents, thanks to target printables.

  25. Deb Jacobsen

    **Tyson Anytizers Breaded Chicken $2.49
Use $1/1 coupon from 8/2 Smartsource #2 insert.
The above Tyson’s Breaded coupon from the SS, dated 8/2, expires on 11/30/09. Just in time for me to stock up again!

  26. Lori

Mike, where did you find the $1 pepsi coupons??

  27. Amy

Just started using your site, Carrie, and really love it. Am just starting with the coupon game. My issue is it is very easy to find coupons when I am using your lists because they are listed by date and RP, SS, etc. However, when I need to buy something that is not on your lists that week but I want to use a coupon I tend to stand in the store and page through all of the flyers to find one for the product I need. Any suggestions on how to find those coupons efficiently?

  28. Kitty Schrieb

Did you know that if the cashier rings up the wrong price for product they will give the first one to you for free. I keep an eye on things as they ring up. I have gotten stuff for free when I do this. This is before the coupon is taken off. The prices should match any that are on the shelves or in the adds.

  29. Julie W.

I am new to your site and love it. I was just at cub and bought 3 boxes of Kellogs cereal. I found a coupon on the Kellogs site for $1.50 off of 3 boxes. I paid $2.49 a box minus the coupon for $1.50 so $6.00. There was a free bowl offer on this and I recieved a $4.00 coupon off my next visit. So after all was said and done 3 boxes of cereal and a cereal bowl for $2.00. Pretty good.

  30. Val

    Julie,
Do you know, if the Kellogg’s coupon you got on the Kellogg’s website for all their cereals or only certain kinds? Thanks for your help.
Oh, and that is excellent that you got a $4 off your next purchase coupon too.

  31. Traci

Why whe i click on the links for coupons (jimmy dean sausage) that are green it brings me to a strange website.

  32. Julie W.

Val- The coupon was for Frosted flakes, Apple Jacks and Froot Loops. On the back of the Cub ad it says free milk, but when the coupon is printed it just says $4.00 off of your next purchase.:) Hope this helps. Oh and the free bowl does not have a coupon. It was located right next to cereal, and it just rings up as .99 and then-.99.

  33. Lindsey M

Traci – I don’t see where there is a link anywhere on this page for Jimmy Dean Sausage. I think it is a setting in your internet browser. Trying using a different browser (internet explorer, safari, firefox) and see if anything is different.

  34. Jules

    To Amy (and others)

I found a site that lists all the coupons in Red Plum and Smart source alphabetically each week. I print the list weekly so I can look quickly for coupons when they’re not referenced. It doesn’t take but a minute to look through them all for one thing you need.

    http://www.sundaycouponpreview.com

There’s been few that haven’t matched what I have, (says there woud be campbells but isn’t etc) but overall it’s been great. Allows you to look quick alphabetically.

    Jules

  35. Jenn

I was at cub tonight, got 4 12-pks of diet pepsi and diet drpepper (2 each) and the cashier pulled off one of the ‘stickies’ on the diet pespi 12-pk and scanned it. At first I didn’t notice but when I got home I looked at my reciept and it had a 1.00 coupon deducted that I didn’t recall giving her and after opening up a diet pepsi I saw the stickie on there so I pulled it off and saw it said 1 off your next purchase of sierra mist 2liters. Then I noticed my other pepsi 12-pk was missing this sticky so I assume that she rang it up without reading it. Maybe that’s what some of the readers are talking about??? Otherwise, I don’t know of any 12-pk coupons because I have a couple of $1 off of a 24-pk (case) from the cases a few wks ago but I didn’t use them because it technically isn’t a 24-pk although I did buy two 12-pks. I also got the Trop50 (thank u to the first person who posted the coupon for it!), miracle whip for 1.99 since we were out, and also grabbed 5lbs potatoes for 68 cents. Otherwise, I do the majority of my shopping at Rainbow since we can double coupons there. Cub had some great unbeatable prices again this week! I would definitely shop Cub more if they did double coupons too. I can’t wait for 99 cent chicken again! ;)

  36. Monica

Not sure if anyone is still looking at the deals since it is getting into the week, but I was at Walmart and they have the same price for butter 98 cents and the Philly Cream cheese for 88 cents and the bonus, there is no limit on them, so I stocked up, I freeze butter all the time and it is just fine. I am not sure about the CC, but I am sure you could google it.

  37. Shelly

Does anyone know of a Kraft mayo coupon out there? I have a $1 off two (from the Kraft recipe magazine), but I just want one mayo….

  38. Val

Thanks, Julie, for letting me know about both the Kellogg’s coupon, and the $4 oyno coupon.
I’m planning to go to Cub today and I think I’ll get the Kellogg’s cereals, and get my $4 catalina, then do a 2nd transaction and I can then use my $4 coupon right away.
It’s helpful that you said the catalina is $4 off anything on your order and not just milk like it says in the Cub ad, because my husband is the only milk drinker here and we don’t go through it very fast. So thanks for letting me know about that.

  39. Tippy

I have to say, I’m a bit disappointed that no one has called “Mike” out on the coupon stealing. It’s simply not okay to steal. Ever.

Honestly, if you think the self-serve lanes are such a rip-off, don’t use them. But to believe that you are somehow owed for your begrudging willingness to use them? Absolutely ridiculous. Those lanes serve a very specific purpose, if they don’t meet your needs, don’t use them. Quite simple really.

You are correct about one thing though – this is one of the things that leads to higher prices for everyone. Thanks.

  40. Jules

Just got back from Cub, wanted everyone to know that the Del Monte cans- they said limit 6, but they cashier let me do 8 and use the 1:00/8 from I believe Red Plum this week.

I don’t remember if this was an unanswered question about the Nabisco deal or not, but there is a Big Nabisco stand in the back of my store with cracker sales, on it there is a holiday book that has the rebate form for 10$ off ten participating items, plus there are coupons. Definitely a good pick up. OH yeah , and some good looking recipes too!

  41. Mike

hey, “tippy,” try reading a little closer next time, and a little more critically. you’ll see i called myself out for stealing. nobody needed to “call me out” because i did it myself, and everyone else realized it. i’m disappointed in you.

  42. Amy

Thought I’d leave this one alone but I dislike that it is assumed that because there was no response to Mike that the majority are “everyone else” and agree with what you did, Mike. When I read your e-mail I also thought that you were trying to justify a bad choice. In fact, “justify” is the term you used in your post. Lets be honest…most people do get caught up by temptation periodically but its those who can see it as a mistake and resolve not to do it again (or go back and try to undo the harm they have done) that redeem themselves. It appeared to me in your last thoughts in your post that you had come to that conclusion as well. Tippy, that could by why some did not originally respond to Mike’s post.

  43. Mike

my mistake: i weighed the pros and cons i could argue for why i should or shouldn’t take advantage of the self-checkout machines, pointed out flaws i discovered with the system itself and stole a dollar from cub. i’ll stick to reading carrie’s suggestions and bypass sharing any tips i come across in the future if editorial other comments i may make are going to be misrepresented. i didn’t ask for acceptance or endorsement of what i said. but i wrongly assumed people were able to think critically and realize i wasn’t bragging about what i did, or trying to share a money-saving tip. i wrongly assumed when nobody responded that it meant people realized i wasn’t seeking praise for anything i did.

you won’t have to worry about me pointing out the flaws and ethical debates i come across ever again. and since it’s once in a blue moon i spot a deal that isn’t already noted, you won’t miss out on many money-saving bargains from me. happy couponing!

  44. karmen

Just in case theres someone who has yet to go to cub for the Kelloggs deal, the $4 off coupon prints on the cub receipt not a catalina. I was a little annoyed when it didn’t print out until I looked and saw it attatched to my receipt along with a $2 off survey coupon.

  45. erica f edwards

I have found many times that I am saving more money at Cubs than Rainbow and I even go on double days. I come out of Rainbow exhausted from doing five trans. and I still spend 50.00 dollars and then I go to cubs and wow I come out with a huge bag of items. Any tips would help. I think I will just stick to what is on Carries list and bypass doing so many trans at Rainbow???

    Erica E.

  46. Jennifer

I agree with Tippy 100%. It is people like Mike who ruin it for the rest of us honest coupon using people.

I accidently gave three manufacture coupons for only two items at Target and all three rang up. I noticed the mistake when I was trying to figure out why the Target coupon didn’t show the actual amount of the coupon. Turned out I gave the wrong printed coupon. So I gave that one to the cashier, she took that one off and I tried explaining to her that she needed to add back $1.00 for the extra manufacture coupon. She couldn’t figure out how to do it and the store was extremely busy, so I took my stuff and the coupon and explained it at Customer Service, I got my coupon back and paid them the additional $1.00 that I owed. I would never be able to sleep if I even thought about letting it go. I felt really bad about making the mistake to begin with, but I did get it corrected right away.

  47. Jennifer M.

Jennifer – You should be able to sleep at night if you don’t go through the big hassle you did to get a $1 mistake corrected, because what happened to Peggy (see this week’s Target shopping list comments) has happened to me quite often at Target. I feel like I have to watch the cashier like a hawk and if I have more than about 10 coupons, I hand them to the cashier 2 or 3 at a time because quite often I see them skip one or they drop coupons, etc. When I had my $3 Kashi coupons at a recent trip, thank goodness I had added up what I should have in coupons and when the cashier was done, I knew it was $6 off. Luckily, the missing $3 coupons were easy to find, but word to the wise – add up the amount of coupons you will be giving the cashier and do the math in your head when your total comes up and watch the cashier as they scan the coupons, maybe even handing them a few at a time to make sure none are skipped. I have had the same thing happen at Cub, but not as often as Target. It was easy for you to correct your mistake and hand them the $1, but getting a correction the other way would be quite a feat, so watch close so those mistakes don’t happen.

  48. Bernice Garcia

If you buy 2 of the ICBINB sticks it prints out a $2 catalina .. nice way to sweeten the deal.

Mission corn tortillas are 99 cents a pkg, they have peelies on them for 55 cents off “any” (this will likely continue to be on sale next week as they had a big display at St Anthony)

On displays in the store are coupons for a $1.25 off three of these items (shows holiday recipe and features jello on the front) , it includes the philly cream cheese.

Stella blue chesse or gorgonzola cups in ad coupon $1.99 (limit 2) , in store there are tear pads for $1/2.

In ad coupon 50 cents off culinary circle artisan bread , the cheapest loaves are 99 cents. YUM!
