I’ve found a nice espresso machine (think something a step up from what you would find on the shelf at Target or Wal Mart) to be a good investment, along with a burr grinder. We used Christmas/Birthday gift money to buy them a couple of years ago, so even though it is about $250 worth of equipment, it will last for years and it wasn’t an expense that came out of our regular budget.

As long as I buy quality coffee beans (Peace Coffee is a great brand to look for in the Twin Cities), my drinks taste just as good if not better than the coffee shop drinks. It’s still not as cheap as just drinking brewed coffee, but it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than buying $3-5 drinks at a shop!

My husband makes Americanos and espresso shots without any flavoring syrup, but I have to admit that I like a bit of the sweet stuff in my lattes. Currently, I’m buying my Monin flavoring syrup in a 4-pk on amazon, and it qualifies for free super saver shipping (on bottles that are larger than most places are selling), making it a great deal.

If anyone is looking to research the purchase of quality coffee equipment, a great place to learn more is http://www.coffeegeek.com. They have more info than you probably ever wanted to know about every aspect of coffee making and coffee drinking!

Hi, Carrie! I recently heard you on FM107.1, then went to your site. Thanks for what you do!

What I do to keep my coffee expenses in check? I have a regular, ol’ nice coffee maker (4-cup capacity, but I also have a new 12-cup machine that I haven’t used yet). I buy the Starbuck’s coffee grounds from Target. Sometimes, I add an envelope of Land O’ Lakes hot cocoa (any flavor, but I favor Classic Cocoa), to the entire pot’s contents poured into a suitable mug, and stir well. I take good care of my coffee maker, hoping it will last longer. It’s not fancy, but it’s good enough for me. I have a hodgepodge of great coffee mugs, mostly bought at thrift stores. One pound of $7-8 coffee grounds lasts me a couple of months, since I don’t drink coffee every day (I do keep it stored in an airtight cannister.). Much better than umpteen single glasses of $5-6 drinks from the coffee shops. :-)

One footnote on the McDonald’s offer: The tv commercials state that it’s a *sample*, not a full-size McCafe Mocha which is “free”. Still, it sounds like a good opportunity to try it out, without shelling out the dough. If you don’t care for it, it was only a free sample. Then again, maybe the sample turns out to be a full glass. Guess I’ll find out tomorrow. :-)

My husband and I got ourselves a Senseo coffee maker as our Christmas gift to ourselves a few years ago instead of purchasing separate gifts. It uses the Senseo pods, w hich always seem to be cheapest at Target, so I buy them there. It has been worth every penny. We make coffee that tastes just as good as what comes from Caribou and costs so much less. I usually put a spoon or two of cocoa mix in the bottom of my mug. It tastes just like the mocha coffee you get at Caribou. So I’m like Tashi in that way–we must both like our homemade mocha coffee.

yep, it’s just a sample, but it’s free and tasty!

I love, love love cold blended coffee, think a caribou cooler or frapaccino. I make my own instead of paying four bucks each. Here’s my recipe:

I brew a 12 cup pot of coffee, with double the grounds.
Pop it in the fridge overnight to cool.

bled 2 cups coffee, 1 cup milk (any kind) and about an 1/8 cup sugar (or to your liking). Blend on high for a minute or so and voila! You’ve got kickin cold blended coffee!

When I do give in and buy bottles of this at the gas stations I save my bottles and lids as one batch will fill quite a few bottles and last several days :)
