I've heard a few tips that I use:

- Fill up in the morning when the weather is cooler. When it is hot the gas expands, so you don't get as much gas in your tank. (I'm not really sure how much of a difference this makes, but I do try and fill up in the mornings since I heard that!)

- Fill up on the slowest setting for the pump. The slower flow allows less air to get in your tank, so you can get more gas in. You would actually be paying more for the fill up (also getting more gas), but as I see it over time this would eliminate a trip or two to the gas station a year, making you less likely to make impulse purchases! I've noticed that since I started doing this I can easily get at least one more gallon in during a fill-up.

- If you don't have coupons to use, pay at the pump to eliminate impulse purchases, and if you have to go inside to pay, don't look at anything except your cashier! Go right to the register.
