Effective last week, July 1, you can legally fish without a license (free) in most Minnesota State Parks. You’re legal without a license in a state park if:
- the body of water does not require a trout stamp.
- fishing from shore or wading in water within the state park.
- fishing from a boat or a float on a designated lake within a Minnesota state park
From what I can tell, that means fishing at Fort Snelling State Park is free and a great way to expose your kids to the sport without the effort and cost of getting licenses. Find the state park nearest you here.
I should say that you still need a license in city, country, regional, and federal parks – as well as the five Minnesota State Recreation Areas. The Department of Natural Resources has complete details here.
Your turn: Yes, we can save on the license, but how can we save on fishing equipment, tackle, and bait? Please leave a comment with your suggestions.

I hear the fish are biting on cut up pieces of hot dogs and corn kernels. Just think how cheap you can buy hot dogs, especially when they’re on sale (!) and when that corn on the cob goes bad…
