Planning Pays

milk

I was reminded today that a little planning goes a long way.  I remembered I was out of milk.  Problem was, I remembered when I had two sleeping kids in the car.  They were sure to be hungry as soon as they woke up and no husband at home to make the milk run for me, since he’s out of town on business.  I should have stopped before I picked up my kids from daycare, but I didn’t have my act together and forgot.

So, what did I do?  After considering a quick stop at Cub, which would mean waking up the sleepy, hungry kids…nope.  I considered running into a gas station while my kids slept in the car…nope, not a good idea to leave my kids unsupervised.  Then it came to me!   Drive through McDonald’s and order two milks – one for my toddler’s dinner and one for her breakfast.  No need to wake up the kids.  No need to get out of the car.  Easy and quick.  And expensive!  McDonald’s saved the day, right?  Even though I resisted the temptation to order an entire meal I paid $2.12.  $2.12 for one pint of milk.  Translation: I paid the equivalent of $10.89 per gallon for milk.  Hear that?  $10.89 per gallon all because I didn’t plan my shopping.

Moral of the story:  You keep your money in your pocket by thinking ahead and planning your spending.

You are so right! I kick myself every time I have to pay so much for convenience – which is too often. I am just getting into couponing and serious sale shopping, so I am more aware of this now. Maybe have some powdered milk on hand for those times you find yourself out?
