Car Repairs for Less – Part 3

We are in Part 3 of a series about saving money on car repairs. Part 1 and part 2 were for the more mechanically inclined among us. Parts 3 and 4 are for those that use repair shops. Part 3 walks through concepts to consider when buying auto repair services. Part 4 will provide some specific deals and provide a place for others to provide their best tips.

Very Competitive Industry
Recognize that auto repair is a very competitive industry. That translates to lots of coupons and sale prices for consumers. Last Saturday alone I got five sales flyers in the mail with coupons from auto repair shops.

Identify Rock Bottom Prices
The flyers I got on Saturday advertised oil changes from $14.99 – $20.99. Clearly, auto shops provide similar services at a wide range of price points. Since many auto repairs are done intermittently, you would be well served to jot down the lowest advertised prices you see on various services (oil change, alignment, tire rotation/balance, brake replacement, etc.). Then, when you need work done you know what you should pay.

Always Use a Coupon – Always, period.
There is no reason that you should be purchasing car repair services at full price. Your mail box is probably chocked full of coupons that could save you $5-$50 per auto repair. Invest 2 minutes to sift through the junk mail, pull out the coupons and set them aside. If you only want coupons on demand, then always search the internet before you purchase any auto repair services. There are thousands of coupons available online.

Competitor’s Coupons
Ask your favorite or lowest priced repair shop if they will accept competitor’s coupons. In such a competitive industry you might be pleasantly surprised by what you hear for an answer. Matching everyday low prices with coupons will maximize your savings.

Loyalty Programs
Especially for oil changes, some shops offer a “Buy x number and get 1 free”. If you can use coupons for those you purchase, then this could be a good deal.

Don’t Be Upsold
Have you ever gone to get something simple done on your car and left paying an $80 bill? Shops are masters at getting you to purchase all kinds of additional filters, fluid changes and other add-ons. Yes, you might need those things done, but avoid impulse buying and shopping without a coupon.

What else do you keep in mind when you are looking to get your car repaired in a shop?
